Description/Abstract:
MEASUREMENT OF AN INHALED RADIONUCLIDE BY EXTERNAL PHOTON COUNTING INC LUDES QUANTITIES WHICH MAY BE CONTAINED IN LYMPH NODES, AS WELL AS QUA NTITIES IN THE LUNGS. AN OVERESTIMATE OF THE LUNG BURDEN CAN RESULT, I F A PORTION OF THE RADIONUCLIDE WERE PRESENT IN THE LYMPH NODES. THIS PROBLEM IS ANALYZED WITH RESPECT TO THE MEASUREMENT OF INHALED PLUTONI UM CONTAINING PLUTONIUM-241 AND AMERICIUM-241, WHEN AMERICIUM-241 HAS BEEN USED AS A TRACER FOR THE PLUTONIUM. EQUATIONS ARE DERIVED WHICH Y IELD THE AMOUNTS OF AMERICIUM AND OF PLUTONIUM IN THE LUNGS AND IN THE LYMPH NODES AS A FUNCTION OF TIME AFTER EXPOSURE AND FOR VARIOUS TRAN SLOCATION AND RETENTION PARAMETERS. COMPARISON IS ALSO MADE WITH CALCU LATED COUNT PROFILES USING VALUES OF TRANSLOCATION AND RETENTION PARAM ETERS RECOMMENDED BY THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON RADIOLOGICAL PROT ECTION (ICRP) FOR USE WITH THE TASK GROUP LUNG MODEL. THE MAGNITUDE OF THE POSSIBLE OVERESTIMATE (ERROR FACTOR) WAS CALCULATED FOR COMBINATI ONS OF PARAMETERS WHICH YIELDED MATCHES TO THE OBSERVED COUNT HISTORIE S.
