Description/Abstract:
MEASUREMENTS OF CALIFORNIUM RETENTION IN THE TOTAL BODY AND THE LIVER OF LIVING BEAGLES HAVE BEEN MADE FROM 0 TO 1546 DAYS AFTER INTRAVENOUS ION OF 0.005-2.8 MICROCURIE 249 CALIFORNIUM/KILOGRAM OR 0.016-2.9 MICR CURIE CALIFORNIUM 252 PER KILOGRAM AS CALIFORNIUM (III) CITRATE. THE I NDICATED BIOLOGICAL HALF-TIMES WERE ABOUT 8.5 YR IN THE TOTAL BODY AND 4.2 YR IN THE LIVER. NO IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES COULD BE ESTABLISHED BET WEEN THE RETENTION OF CALIFORNIUM 249 AND CALIFORNIUM 252. CALIFORNIUM WAS FOUND IN ALMOST EVERY TISSUE OF FOUR DOGS SACRIFICED AT 7-36 DAYS AFTER INJECTION. LIVER AND SKELTON HAD THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATIONS, WIT H THYROID AND KIDNEY EXHIBITING SOMEWHAT LOWER VALUES. THE CONCENTRATI ONS OF MOST OTHER TISSUES WERE CONSIDERABLY LOWER. IODINE ISOTOPES RES ULTING FROM THE SPONTANEOUS FISSION OF CALIFORNIUM 252 WERE IDENTIFIED IN THE THYROID GLANDS OF CALIFORNIUM 252-INJECTED DOGS. UTILIZING THE FISSION GAMMA RAYS OF CALIFORNIUM 252 SEEMS TO BE A SATISFACTORY METH OD OF ASSAY FOR THIS RADIONUCLIDE DESPITE THE MINOR CONTRIBUTION FROM ATION OF FISSION PRODUCTS. REDEPOSITION ONTO BONE SURFACES OF CALIFORN IUM LOST FROM LIVER TISSUE PROBABLY CONTRIBUTES TO THE IRRADIATION OF CELLS THAT ARE BELIEVED TO BE MOST SENSITIVE TO BONE SARCOMA FORMATION . THE FISSION FRAGMENT RADIATION OF CALIFORNIUM 252 APPEARS TO BE MUCH LESS EFFECTIVE PER RAD IN BONE SARCOMA INDUCTION THAN ALPHA RADIATION
