Description/Abstract:
TECHNIQUES FOR IDENTIFYING SPECIFIC RADIONUCLIDES ASSOCIATED WITH SPEC IFIC SOIL COMPONENTS AND PLANT ROOTS IN SOIL CORES ARE DESCRIBED. SOIL CORES UP TO 10 CM IN DIAMETER AND 30 CM IN DEPTH WERE TAKEN IN THE FI ELD USING STEEL TUBES. THE OVEN-DRIED CORES ARE IMPREGNATED WITH EMBED DING PLASTIC; THERE IS NO EVIDENT DISTURBANCE OF THE SOIL WITHIN THE C ORES EXCEPT AT THE PERIPHERY. A DIAMOND SAW IS USED TO CUT SERIAL SECT IONS WHICH ARE SUFFICIENTLY SMOOTH FOR AUTORADIOGRAPHY. NO-SCREEN X-RA Y FILM IS USED FOR LOW RESOLUTION AUTORADIOGRAPHS WITH RELATIVELY SHOR T EXPOSURE TIMES. IF SUFFICIENT RADIOACTIVITY IS PRESENT, FINET DEFINI TION IS OBTAINED WITH SLOWER EXTRA-FINE-GRAIN X-RAY FILM.
