Description/Abstract:
IN THE SPRING OF 1953 HERDS OF SHEEP WINTERING IN S. NEVADA NORTH OF T HE NEVADA TEST SITE EXPERIENCED UNUSUAL MORTALITY. IN ELEVEN HERDS OF SHEEP (APJROXIMATELY 18,000 ANIMALS) 4400 EWS AND LAMBS DIED. SEVERA L CAUSES FOR THE MORTALITY INCIDENT SUCH AS LOW RANGE PRODUCTIVITY AND RELATED POOR NUTRITION, TOXIC PLANTS, RANGE DISEASES, AND RADIATION I NJURY FROM FALLOUT INGESTION WERE PROPOSED, BUT NONE OF THESE CAUSAL F ACTORS WAS PROVEN BY THE AVAILABLE DATA. THERE WERE SEVERAL TESTS CON DUCTED AT THE NEVADA TEST SITE DURING THE SPRING OF 1953 AND RADIOACTI VITY WAS PRESENT ON RANGE VEGATATION IN THE WINTERING AREA. THE LOCATION AND MOVEMENT OF SHEEP HERDS IN THE AREA AND (CONTINUED) (CONTINUED) THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DESERT RANGE VEGETATION ARE DESCRIB ED IN THIS REPORT. THE MAXIMUM EXTERNAL GAMMA EXPOSURE RATE IN THE AR EA OF WINTERING SHEEP (NEAR LINCOLN MINE, NEVADA) WAS 100 MILLIROENTGE N PER HOUR FROM EVENT NANCY (23 MARCH 1953); THIS WOULD HAVE PRODUCED AN INTEGRATED DOSE TO THE WHOLE BODY OF ABOUT 5 RADS. FOR THE SAME CO NDITIONS, THE BETA DOSE TO SHEEP BASAL EPIDERMIS UNDER FULL WOOL IS CA LCULATED TO BE ABOUT 50 RADS AND 630 RADS UNDER BARE SKIN. THE INTAKE OF FALLOUT ON CONTAMINATED RANGE VEGETATION WHOSE RADIOACTI VITY WAS PRODUCED BY EVENT NANCY WAS ESTIMATED AND THE RESULTANT RADIA TION DOSES TO SHEEP ORGANS AND FETUSES WERE CALCULATED. (CONTINUED) THE MOST LIKELY DOSE TO THE THYROID OF ADULT AND FETAL SHEEP WAS CALCU LATED TO HAVE BEEN 100 AND 400 RADS, RESPECTIVELY. ADDITIONAL DOSE CA LCULATIONS WERE MADE FOR SHEEP BEING HELD IN CEDAR CITY, UTAH FOR SHEA RING AND LAMBING WHERE THEY MAY HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO FALLOUT FROM EVEN T HARRY (19 MAY 1953). MOST MORTALITY HAD OCCURRED PREVIOUS TO THAT T IME, HOWEVER. THE MAJOR CONCLUSION OF THIS STUDY IS THAT THE INGESTION OF FALLOUT BY SHEEP IN S. NEVADA IN THE SPRING OF 1953 WAS NOT LIFE-THREATENING, AN D WAS INSUFFICIENT TO HAVE RESULTED IN GASTROINTESTINAL DEATH AS SUGGE STED RECENTLY BY KNAPP. WE CALCULATE THAT THE DOSE TO (CONTINUED) THE SHEEP'S LOWER LARGE INTESTINE WAS ONLY 1.4 RADS FROM FALLOUT DEPOS ITED BY EVENT NANCY IN PENOYER VALLEY. THE MOST CRITICAL FACTOR IN TH IS ANALYSIS IS THE VALUE OF P/W, THE FRACTION OF FALLOUT RETAINED BY V EGETATION DIVIDED BY THE BIOMASS. WE REVIEW AND SUMMARIZE RELEVANT DA TA FOR THIS PARAMETER AS MEASURED FOR ACTUAL FALLOUT FROM WEAPONS TEST S.
