Description/Abstract:
THIS REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF A LITERATURE REVIEW TO DERIVE TRAN SFER FACTORS TO PREDICT THE TRANSFER OF RADIONUCLIDES FROM CONTAMINATE D VEGETATION TO MEAT AND EGGS. UPDATE ESTIMATES OF TRANSFER COEFFICIE NTS FROM FEED TO BEEF, PORK, LAMB, CHICKEN AND HENS' EGGS ARE PRESENTE D FOR A LARGE NUMBER OF RADIONUCLIDES ASSOCIATED WITH THE NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE. THE TRANSFER COEFFICIENT (FF) TO MEAT IS DEFINED AS THE FRACT ION OF THE NUCLIDE INGESTED DAILY BY AN ANIMAL THAT IS FOUND IN A KILO GRAM OF MUSCLE FROM THE ANIMAL UNDER STEADY-STSTE OR EQUILIBRIUM CONDI TION OR AT THE TIME OF SLAUGHTER. THE (FF) TO EGGS IS SIMILARLY DEFIN ED. BOTH DIRECT APPROACHES AND INDIRECT APPROACHES USING COLLATERAL D ATA WERE USED TO DERIVE TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS. THE SOURCES OF UNCERTA INTY ARE DESCRIBED, AND WHERE SUFFICIENT DATA EXIST, THE INHERENT VARI ABILITY OF (FF) VALUES IS CHARACTERIZED BY STATISTICAL PARAMETERS OF T HE DISTRIBUTIONS. SUMMARY TABLES OF ELEMENTAL TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS F ROM FEED TO BEEF, PORK, LAMB, CHICKEN AND HENS' EGGS ARE PRESENTED. T HESE ESTIMATES, ALONG WITH A DISCUSSION OF THE ASSOCIATED UNCERTAINTIE S, PROVIDE A BASIS FOR SYSTEMATICALLY UPDATING THE VALUES OF (FF)(BEEF ) IN REGULATORY GUIDE 1.109 AND FOR DERIVING (FF) VALUES FOR OTHER APP LICATIONS THAT INVOLVE THE USE OF EQUILBRIUM MODELS TO PREDICT CONCENT TRATIONS OF RADIONUCLIDES IN ANIMAL PRODUCTS.
