BASED ON MEASUREMENTS OF EXTERNAL Y-RADIATION ATTRIBUTED TO FALLOUT DE POSITED ON THE GROUND, THE OFFSITE POPULATION OF APPROXIMATELY 188,000 PERSONS RESIDING AROUND THE NEVADA TEST SITE RECEIVED A COLLECTIVE EX POSURE OF 120,000 PERSONS-R FROM ATOMIC TESTS CONDUCTED BETWEEN 1951 A ND 1970. THE GREAT MAJORITY, ABOUT 160,000 PERSONS, RECEIVED LESS THAN 0.5 R CUMULATIVE EXPOSURE FROM EXTERNAL Y-RADIATION. THE HIGHEST CUMU LATIVE EXPOSURE MEASURED AT A POPULATED SITE WAS 17.5 R. INTERNAL EXPO SURE, FROM INHALATION AND INGESTION AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE RADIAT ION EXPOSURE TO THIS POPULATION, HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED.
