Description/Abstract:
REPRESENTATIVES OF THE COLUMBIA GAS SYSTEM SERVICE CORPORATION, THE AE C'S SAN FRANCISCO OPERATIONS OFFICE, THE LAWRENCE RADIATION LABORATORY , AND THE UNITED STATES BUREAU OF MINES HAVE PREPARED THIS STUDY REPOR T WHICH EXAMINES THE FEASIBILITY OF USING NUCLEAR EXPLOSIVES TO CREATE UNDERGROUND GAS STORAGE. THE DEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION OF THE GAS IND USTRY THROUGHOUT THE U.S.A. REQUIRES A GROWING NEED FOR NATURAL GAS ST ORAGE CAPACITY. THE NATION NOW HAS LESS THAN 4 1/2 TRILLION CUBIC FEET OF SUCH STORAGE AND COULD USE AN ADDITIONAL 5 TRILLION CUBIC FEET IF AVAILABLE AT LOW COST. BY 1975 A TOTAL OF 14 TRILLION CUBIC FEET WOUL D BE NEEDED TO SERVE ADEQUATELY ALL REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES. A CO NTAINED UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR EXPLOSION PRODUCES VOID SPACE WHICH COULD BE USED FOR STORAGE OF NATURAL GAS NEAR THE CONSUMER END OF NATURAL G AS NEAR THE CONSUMER END OF NATURAL GAS TRANSMISSION LINES. STORAGE FA CILITIES SO DEVELOPED OFFER THE POTENTIAL OF BEING ECONOMICALLY SUPERI OR TO MINED CAVITIES AND CRYOGENIC NATURAL GAS FACILITIES. THEY MAY AL SO BE COMPETITIVE IN AREAS WHERE NATURAL STORAGE IN DEPLETED GAS FIELD S EXISTS BUT IS GROWING SCARCE, OR WHERE RAPID DELIVERABILITY OF STORE D GAS IS A FACTOR.
