Description/Abstract:
WHAT IS MEANT BY A MEASUREMENT STANDARD IS FIRST DISCUSSED, AND THE WO RLD-PICTURE IN RESPECT OF THE ESTABLISHMENT AND COMPARSION OF NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR RADIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENTS BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. THE SETTI NG UP OF HIERARCHAL STRUCTURES FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF UNITS OF MEASU REMENT IS THEN CONSIDERED, SUCH STRUCTURES AIMING TO ENSURE TRACEABILI TY TO THE NATIONAL STANDARDS. THE EXPERIENCE GAINED IN THE UNITED KIN GDOM IS SETTING-UP SUCH DISSEMINATION SCHEMES IS THEN PRESENTED FOR A SERIES OF DIFFERENT FIELDS. FOR RADIOTHERAPY-LEVELS, INITIALLY WITH P HOTONS, AND LATER WITH ELECTRONS ALSO, A COMPREHENSIVE NATION-WIDE SCH EME WAS DEVELOPED BY CONSULTATION BETWEEN THE NATIONAL PHYSICAL LABORA TORY, THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL SECURITY, AND THE HOSPITAL P HYSICISTS' ASSOCIATION. THIS SCHEME INCLUDES THE DESIGNATION OF SECON DARY STANDARDIZING CENTRES, THE DEVELOPMENT AND ALLOCATION OF SECONDAR Y STANDARD INSTRUMENTS, AND THE PREPARATION OF CODES OF PRACTICE. SIM ILARLY, AT PROCESSING-LEVELS, A COMPREHENSIVE DOSIMETRY SCHEME IS IN O PERATION TO REACH PLANTS SUCH AS THOSE ENGAGED IN THE STERILIZATION OF PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A P ARALLEL COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF UNITS FOR BOTH P HOTONS AND BETA-RAYS AT PROTECTION-LEVEL IS LESS ADVANCED; IN THIS INS TANCE, THE PARTICIPATION OF THE BRITISH DIRECT SUPERVISION OF SECONDAR Y, AND POSSIBLY TERTIARY STANDARDIZING LABORATORIES, AND THE PROPOSALS ARE SUBJECT TO FUTHER DISCUSSION. SIMILARLY, A COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME HAS BEEN PROPOSED FOR THE SIDDEMINATION OF THE UNIT OF ACTIVITY, AND S TEPS ARE IN HAND FOR ITS IMPLEMENTATION. BRIEF MENTION IS MADE OF A ' PENETRAMETER' CALIBRATION SERVICE OPERATED FOR THE BENEFIT OF DIAGNOST IC RADIOLOGY, AND OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NATIONAL REFERENCE STANDARDS FOR NEUTRON DOSIMETRY. FINALLY, ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO LIMITATION OF THE PRESENT SYSTEM, INCLUDING THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL PERFORMANCE TEST S, AND FOR SYSTEMATIC FEED-BACK OF INFORMATION TO CONFIRM THE SUCCESS, OR OTHERWISE, OF THE DISSEMINATION SCHEMES.
