Description/Abstract:
PRAETORIAN WAS THE NAME ASSIGNED TO THE SERIES OF UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED AT THE NEVADA TEST SITE FROM OCTOBER 1, 1981 THR OUGH SEPTEMBER 30, 1982. REMOTE RADIATION MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN DUR ING AND AFTER EACH NUCLEAR EXPERIMENT BY A TELEMETRY SYSTEM. MONITORS WITH PORTABLE RADIATION DETECTION INSTRUMENTS SURVEYED REENTRY ROUTES INTO GROUND ZEROS BEFORE OTHER PLANNED ENTRIES WERE MADE. CONTINUOUS SURVEILLANCE WAS PROVIDED WHILE PERSONNEL WERE IN RADIATION AREAS AND APPROPRIATE PRECAUTIONS WERE TAKEN TO PROTECT PERSONS FROM UNNECESSAR Y EXPOSURE TO RADIATION AND TOXIC GASES. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUI PMENT WERE ISSUED AS NEEDED. COMPLETE RADIOLOGICAL SAFETY AND INDUSTR IAL HYGIENE COVERAGE WAS PROVIDED DURING DRILLING AND MINEBACK OPERATI ONS. TELEMETERED AND PORTABLE RADIATION DETECTOR MEASUREMENTS ARE LIS TED. DETECTION INSTRUMENTATION USED IS DESCRIBED AND SPECIFIC OPERATI ONAL PROCEDURES ARE DEFINED.
