Description/Abstract:
THE PREMISE THAT BETA RADIATION CAN PRESENT SIGNIFICANT HAZARDS TO SMA LL, UNPROTECTED ORGANISMS IS EXAMINED. TWO GENERALIZED METHODS FOR CA LCULATING BETA DOSES ARE DISCUSSED, AND SPECIFIC NUMERICAL CALCULATION S AND RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR SIMPLE EMITTER-ABSORBER GEOMETRIES. THE S AMPLE RESULTS STRONGLY INDICATE THAT BETA DOSE WOULD BE AN IMPORTANT C OMPONENT OF THE HAZARD FROM RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINANTS IN THE CIRCUMSTAN CES POSITED.
