Description/Abstract:
NEW INFORMATION ON THE NATURE OF NUCLEAR CHARGE DISTRIBUTION IN THERMA L NEUTRON FISSION OF URANIUM 235 HAS BEEN OBTAINED FROM MEASUREMENTS O F FISSION YIELDS OF THE MAJOR CONSTITUENTS IN EACH OF THREE ADJACENT M ASS CHAINS. A REGULAR VARIATION IN THE WIDTH OF THE CHARGE DISTRIBUTI ON CURVES WITH MASS NUMBER HAS BEEN SHOWN, AND VALUES OF THE MOST PROB ABLE NUCLEAR CHARGE HAVE BEEN DETERMINED. NO EFFECTS ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE 50 PROTON OR 82 NEUTRON CLOSED SHELLS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED IN THE CH ARGE DISTRIBUTION CURVES EXAMINED. INDEPENDENT AND CUMULATIVE FISSION YIELD VALUES WERE DETERMINED FOR THE SEVERAL MAJOR CONSTITUENTS IN EA CH OF THE THREE MASS CHAINS 131, 132, (1.66 PLUS OR MINUS 0.40) PERCEN T INDEPENDENT; TIN 132, (0.59 PLUS OR MINUS 0.17) PERCENT CUMULATIVE; ANTIMONY 132, (2.76 PLUS OR MINUS 0.35) PERCENT INDEPENDENT; TELLURIUM 132, (0.86 PLUS OR MINUS 0.10) PERCENT INDEPENDENT; TIN 133, LESS THA N 0.015 PERCENT CUMULATIVE; ANTIMONY 133, (3.05 PLUS OR MINUS 0.39) PE RCENT INDEPENDENT; TELLURIUM 133M, (2.19 PLUS OR MINUS 0.33) PERCENT I NDEPENDENT; TELLURIUM 133G (2.07 PLUS OR MINUS 0.31) PERCENT INDEPENDE NT; AND IODINE 133, (0.17 PLUS OR MINUS 0.06) PERCENT INDEPENDENT. TH E CHARGE DISTRIBUTION CURVE FOR EACH MASS CHAIN WAS ESTABLISHED FROM T HE FISSION YIELD DATA. THE DATA WERE FITTED TO THE GAUSSIAN RELATIONS HIP, P(Z) = A EXP-Z(P)SQUARED/C. THE WIDTHS OF THE CURVES AS GIVEN BY VALUES OF C FOR MASS CHAINS 131, 132 AND 133 ARE, RESPECTIVELY: 1.10 PLUS OR MINUS 0.05, 0.74 PLUS OR MINUS 0.08, 0.57 PLUS OR MINUS 0.05. THE DATA SHOW A MONOTONIC DECREASE IN THE WIDTH OF THE CHARGE DISTRIB UTION CURVES WITH INCREASING FISSION PRODUCT MASS NUMBER. IMPLICATION S OF THIS OBSERVATION ARE DISCUSSED IN RESPECT TO PREVIOUS ASSUMPTIONS OF A SINGLE CHARGE DISTRIBUTION CURVE FOR ALL FISSION PRODUCT MASSES IN LOW ENERGY FISSION. VALUES OF ZP AS GIVEN BY THE GAUSSIAN CURVES F OR MASS CHAINS 131, 132 AND 133 ARE, RESPECTIVELY: 50.72 PLUS OR MINUS 0.07, 51.07 PLUS OR MINUS 0.06, 51.59 PLUS OR MINUS 0.04. THESE VALU ES ARE COMPARED TO PUBLISHED VALUES DERIVED FROM ASSUMPTIONS OF A SING LE CHARGE DISTRIBUTION CURVE FOR ALL MASS CHAINS. PREDICTED EFFECTS O F NUCLEAR SHELLS ON CHARGE DISTRIBUTION HAVE BEEN EXAMINED IN LIGHT OF THE PRESENT DATA. NO EFFECT WAS DETECTED IN MASS CHAINS 131, 132 AND 133. NEW HALD-LIFE VALUES DETERMINED ARE: TIN 131, 1.32 PLUS OR MINU S 0.23 MIN; TIN 132, 1.00 PLUS OR MINUS 0.17 MIN; ANTIMONY 132, 3.13 P LUS OR MINUS 0.33 MIN; AND ANTIMONY 133, 2.67 PLUS OR MINUS 0.33 MIN. THE HALF-LIFE OF TIN 133 WAS ESTIMATED TO BE 55 SEC.
