Description/Abstract:
THE FORMATION OF PALLADIUM 115 THERMAL NEUTRON FISSION OF URANIUM 235 WAS STUDIED QUANTITATIVELY. A PROCEDURE WAS DEVELOPED WHICH RAPIDLY S EPARATED PALLADIUM FROM DAUGHTER ELEMENTS SILVER AND CADMIUM. SEPARAT IONS WERE MADE FROM 2.8 TO 120 SEC AFTER FISSION. THE GROWTH OF CADMI UM 115 FROM PALLADIUM SEPARATED AT VARIOUS TIMES CONSTITUTED A DECAY C URVE FOR PALLADIUM 115. THE HALF-LIFE THUS DETERMINED WAS 40.5 +4.0/- 3.0 SEC, A VALUE WHICH AGREES WITH THAT PREVIOUSLY REPORTED. THE CUMU LATIVE FRACTIONAL YEILD OF PALLADIUM 115 COMPARED TO THE TOTAL CADMIUM 115 YIELD WAS 90.5 PLUS OR MINUS 7.2 PERCENT. ESTIMATION OF THE MOST PROBABLE NUCLEAR CHARGE MUST AWAIT INFORMATION ON THE CONTRIBUTION OF OTHER MEMBERS TO THE YIELD OF THE 115 MASS CHAIN.
