Description/Abstract:
THE INFRARED TRANSMISSION SPECTRA OF A SERIES OF RUBIDIUM BORATES CONS ISTING OF VARYING PROPORTIONS OF RUBIDIUM OXIDE AND BORON OXIDE HAVE B EEN STUDIED IN THE 2.5 TO 15.5 MICRON RANGE. THE RUBIDIUM OXIDE CONCE NTRATION VARIED FROM 4.2 TO 50 MOLE PERCENT. FREQUENCY ASSIGNMENTS WE RE MADE FOR MOLECULAR GROUPS IN THESE RUBIDIUM BORATES. THE RESULTS CA N BE INTERPRETED TO INDICATE THAT AN INCREASING PROPORTION OF TRIGONAL LY COORDINATED BORON ATOMS IN THE BORATE GLASS NETWORK STRUCTURE BECAM E TETRAHEDRALLY COORDINATED AS THE RUBIDIUM OXIDE CONTENT WAS INCREASE D UP TO 33 MOLE PERCENT. THIS WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A SIMULTANEOUS INCRE ASE IN THE CONCENTRATION OF TERMINAL BORON-OXYGEN GROUPS. GLASSES CON TAINING RUBIDIUM OXIDE IN EXCESS OF 33 MOLE PERCENT TENDED TO DEVITRIF Y AS BORON REVERTED TO TRIGONAL COORDINATION. AT 50 MOLE PERCENT, THE RUBIDIUM METABORATE STRUCTURE RESEMBLED THAT OF SODIUM METABORATE. S ELECTED METAL OXIDES, INTRODUCED INTO GLASSES OF HIGH RUBIDIUM OXIDE C ONTENT, ENTERED INTO COMPLEX FORMATION WITH BORON-OXYGEN GROUPS TO REC ONSTITUTE THE NETWORK STRUCTURE OF THE GLASS.
