Description/Abstract:
ELECTROCHEMICAL CORROSION-RATE MEASUREMENTS ON MATERIALS USED IN THE S NAP-23 RADIOISOTOPICALLY-FUELED POWER SYSTEM HAVE BEEN MADE IN SEAWATE R AT ROOM TEMPERATURE. THE MATERIALS EXAMINED INCLUDED COPPER, HASTEL LOY C, INCONEL-600, INCONEL-718, 304 STAINLESS STEEL, TANTALUM, TITANI UM AND URANIUM PER 8 PERCENT-MOLYBDENUM ALLOY. THE NORMAL COROSION RA TE OF EACH MATERIAL WAS MEASURED BY MEANS OF GALVANOSTATIC POLARIZATIO N TECHNIQUES. A GALVANIC SERIES OF THE MATERIALS IN SEAWATER WAS DETE RMINED AND THE GALVANIC CURRENTS BETWEEN GALVANICALLY COUPLED MATERIAL S WERE MEASURED WITH A ZERO-RESISTANCE AMMETER CIRCUIT. THE EFFECT OF GALVANIC COUPLING OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS OF THE SNAP-23 SYSTEM DOE S NOT MATERIALLY CHANGE THE CONTAINMENT TIME OF THE STRONTIUM-90 FUEL IN THE CORROSIVE SEAWATER ENVIRONMENT.
