Description/Abstract:
THE DISSOLUTION BEHAVIOR IN SEAWATER OF PLUTONIUM-DIOXIDE/ZIRCONIUM-DI OXIDE SOLID-SOLUTION SNAP FUELS HAS BEEN EXAMINED. THREE DIFFERENT CO MPOSITIONS WERE STUDIED - 100 WEIGHT PERCENT PLUTONIUM DIOXIDE, 93 WEI GHT PERCENT PLUTONIUM DIOXIDE AND 65 WEIGHT PERCENT PLUTONIUM DIOXIDE. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FINDING WAS THAT SMALL (100-200 MICRONS) PARTIC LES FLAKED OFF THE FUEL SPECIMENS DURING THE COURSE OF THE EXPERIMENT. THIS FLAKING PHENOMENON WAS MOST APPARENT FOR THE 100 WEIGHT PERCENT PLUTONIUM DIOXIDE SPECIMEN.
