Description/Abstract:
THE TRANSPORT OF RADIOACTIVE DEBRIS BY ZOOPLANKTON FROM CONCENTRATED P OOLS WITHIN OR BENEATH THE THERMOCLINE COULD PRESENT OPPORTUNITY TO AI D THE POLICING OF FISSION PRODUCT RELEASE IN THE MARINE ECOSYSTEM. A G REATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE DYNAMICS BETWEEN THE MARINE PLANKTON AND P OOLS OF NUCLEAR DEBRIS SHOULD VERIFY CONCEPTS SUGGESTED BY BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHERS AND LIMNOLOGISTS. SPECIAL SUPPORT FOR BIOLOGICAL TRANS PORT MECHANISMS COMES FROM (A) DIRECT OBSERVATIONS UPON BIOLOGICAL TRA NSPORT OF NUCLEAR DEBRIS WITHIN AN OCEAN STRUCTURE; (B) MIGRATION DATA UPON THE DEEP SCATTERING LAYER AND VARIOUS ZOOPLANKTON; AND (C) REPOR TS UPON THE METABOLISM OF FISSION PRODUCTS WITHIN THE OCEANIC FOOD WEB . THIS REPORT HAS ASSEMBLED INFORMATION, PARTICULARLY FOR THE NONBIOLO GIST, OVER THE PARAMETERS OF OCEAN SYSTEMS WHICH MIGHT BE FITTED INTO MODELS FOR BIOLOGICAL TRANSPORT. LIMITED DATA ALREADY EXISTS SUPPORTI NG THE EXISTENCE OF POTENTIAL FISSION PRODUCT TRANSPORT BY VERTICALLY MIGRATING MARINE ORGANISMS. THIS COMPILATION OF RELATED INFORMATION MA KES THAT POSSIBILITY APPEAR MOST PROBABLE.
