Description/Abstract:
THE PRE-BUGGY EXPERIMENT CONDUCTED BY THE U. S. ARMY ENGINEER NUCLEAR CRATERING GROUP WAS DESIGNED TO MEASURE THE FRACTION OF VENTED RADIOAC TIVITY FROM A SERIES OF THE UNDERGROUND DETONATIONS CONTAINING RADIOAC TIVE SOURCES. NAVAL RADIOLOGICAL DEFENSE LABORATORY (NRDL) ASSISTED I N THIS EXPERIMENT BY PREPARING 29 CAPSULES CONTAINING CURIE AMOUNTS OF LANTHANUM-140 FOR SHIPMENT TO THE NEVADA TEST SITE (NTS) ON SCHEDULE. THE LEVEL OF GAMMA ACTIVITY IN EACH CAPSULE WAS SUFFICIENT TO PROVID E A RADIOTRACING OF THE DEBRIS WHICH RESULTED FROM THE DETONATION. IN ADDITION NAVAL RADIOLOGICAL DEFENSE LABORATORY FURNISHED "ALWAYS OPEN " FALLOUT COLLECTORS TO SAMPLE THE DEBRIS, AND A LOW-GEOMETRY SCINTILL ATION COUNTER TO MEASURE ITS LANTHANUM-140 CONTENT. PARTICLE SIZE MEA SUREMENTS OF THE DEBRIS INDICATED THAT LANTHANUM-140 WAS ADSORBED ON T HE SURFACE OF THE SOIL PARTICLES. SOME 96 PERCENT OF THE ACTIVITY WAS ASSOCIATED WITH SUB-SIEVE PARTICLES REPRESENTING ONLY 8 PERCENT OF TH E MASS AND 90 PERCENT OF THE AVAILABLE SURFACE AREA.
