Description/Abstract:
WORK CONDUCTED AT NRDL SINCE 1949 ON THE DECONTAMINATION AND PROTECTIO N OF CONCRETE IS SUMMARIZED. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT IONIC CONTAMINAN T PENETRATES BENEATH THE SURFACE OF BARE CONCRETE AND SURFACE REMOVAL METHODS ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN MORE THAN 90 PERCENT REMOVAL OF CONTAMI NANT. DRY AND SLURRY CONTAMINANTS ARE EFFECTIVELY REMOVED BY LIQUID C LEANING METHODS AND DRY CONTAMINANTS CAN BE REMOVED BY VACUUM PICK-UP. PROTECTIVE COATINGS MINIMIZE THE PROBLEM OF REMOVING IONIC CONTAMINA NT FROM CONCRETE AND INCREASE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LIQUID CLEANING MET HODS IN REMOVING BOTH DRY AND SLURRY CONTAMINANTS.
