Description/Abstract:
THE AVAILABLE CONCEPTS OF CONTAMINATION BY AND DECONTAMINATION OF FALL OUT RESULTING FROM NUCLEAR DETONATIONS AT SEA, ON LAND, AND OVER HARBO RS ARE REVIEWED; AND THEORETICAL EQUATIONS DESCRIBING THE IMPORTANT CH EMICAL INTERACTIONS WITH SURFACES ARE SUMMARIZED, AND OTHERS ARE NEWLY DEVELOPED. THE THEORETICAL EQUATIONS ARE FITTED TO AND COMPARED WITH APPLICABLE EXPERIMENTAL DATA. THE THEORY CAN BE USED AS AN AID IN PL ANNING DECONTAMINATION EXPERIMENTS AS WELL AS IN INTERPRETING DECONTAM INATION DATA FROM FIELD TESTS, SINCE IT DESIGNATES THE IMPORTANT VARIA BLES ON WHICH THE DECONTAMINATION RESULTS DEPEND. THESE VARIABLES INC LUDE (1) THE INITIAL LEVEL OF CONTAMINATION, (2) THE SURFACE CONTAMINA TED, (3) THE DECONTAMINATION METHOD, (4) THE ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS A T THE POINT OF DETONATION, (5) THE COMPOSITION OF THE RADIOACTIVE SOUR CES IN THE FALLOUT, AND (6) THE YIELD AND CONSTITUENTS OF THE BOMB. P RACTICAL USES OF THE THEORY IS ILLUSTRATED BY THE INTERPRETATION OF DA TA FROM SEVERAL DECONTAMINATION EXPERIMENTS. THE INTENT OF THE REPORT ED THEORY IS TO ESTABLISH A BASIS FOR APPLICATION OF CONSISTENT SCIENT IFIC METHODS IN EXPERIMENTAL DECONTAMINATION INVESTIGATIONS AND IN INT ERPRETATION OF DATA IN THE FIELD. THE STATE OF AVAILABLE LITERATURE O N THE SUBJECT IS A CLEAR INDICATION THAT GUIDES TO A SCIENTIFIC APPROA CH ARE NEEDED.
