Description/Abstract:
THE USE OF INORGANIC ION EXCHANGERS, WHICH ARE SELECTIVE FOR CESIUM, A ND THEIR APPLICATION IN OCEAN SAMPLING HAVE BEEN ADAPTED INTO AN IN SI TU PUMP/ADSORBER SAMPLING TECHNIQUE. THE NEW SAMPLING SYSTEM, WHICH I S CAPABLE OF PROCESSING VERY LARGE VOLUMES OF SEAWATER TO A MAXIMUM DE PTH OF 2000 METERS, IS DESCRIBED. THE SYSTEM WAS TESTED AND EVALUATED DURING TWO OCEAN CRUISES, AND THE IMPROVEMENT IN RESOLUTION POSSIBLE BY THIS ION-EXCHANGE METHOD FOR CESIUM 137 DETERMINATIONS WAS DEMONSTR ATED. THE SYSTEM WILL YIELD RESOLUTION OF THE ORDER OF 0.002 DISINTEG RATIONS PER MINUTE PER LITER IN CESIUM 137 CONCENTRATION DETERMINATION S FOR EFFECTIVE VOLUMES SAMPLED OF 1000 LITERS. A RANGE OF CESIUM 137 CONCENTRATION DETERMINATIONS FROM AS LOW AS 0.007 DISINTEGRATIONS PER MINUTE PER LITER TO A SURFACE CONCENTRATION VALUE OF 1.9 DISINTEGRATI ONS PER MINUTE PER LITER IS CITED. AN EVALUATION OF TWO INORGANIC ION EXCHANGERS, POTASSIUM HEXACYANOCOBALT FERRATE (KCFC) AND AMMONIUM HEX ACYANOCOBALT FERRATE (NCFC), BOTH OF WHICH WERE USED IN THE PUMP/ADSOR BER SYSTEM, IS PRESENTED.
