Description/Abstract:
AN OBJECTIVE METHOD OF ANALYZING BATHYTHERMOGRAPH DATA IS DISCUSSED. I NSTEAD OF TEMPERATURES BEING READ AT DISCRETE DEPTHS, THE METHOD RELIE S ON DEPTHS BEING READ AT DISCRETE TEMPERATURES. FROM THESE DEPTHS THE FIRST AND SECOND DIFFERENCES ARE CALCULATED. A SIMPLE ANALYSIS OF THE SE DIFFERENCES ENABLES AN OBJECTIVE DEFINITION OF THE TOP, CENTER AND BOTTOM OF THE THERMOCLINE TO BE MADE. SECONDARY FEATURES SUCH AS TRANS IENTS, MULTIPLE THERMOCLINES AND INVERSIONS ARE EXAMINED IN THE LIGHT OF THIS METHOD AND OBJECTIVELY ANALYZE WITH SOME SUCCESS. THE ACCURACY WITH WHICH THESE FEATURES CAN BE OBTAINED EPENDS ON THE SELECTION OF THE INTERVAL BETWEEN THE DISCRETE TEMPERATURES. THE MINIMUM INTERVAL BETWEEN THE DISCRETE TEMPERATURES. THE MINIMUM INTERVAL IS LIMITED BY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE INSTRUMENT. A GENERAL PROGRAM FOR THE EFFI CIENT HANDLING OF BATHYTHERMOGRAPH DATA IS SUGGESTED. FLOW DIAGRAMS FO R A COMPUTER PROGRAM BASED ON THE METHOD PRESENTED IS GIVEN IN THE APP ENDIX.
