Description/Abstract:
THE TENTH QUARTERLY REPORT BEING SUBMITTED FOR CONTRACT AT-04-1-GEN-12 IS ISSUED IN ACCORDANCE WITH SERVICE REQUEST NUMBER 1, EXCEPT FOR THE REPORT OF THE ALAMOGORDO SECTION, CODE 91810, WHICH IS SUBMITTED IN A CCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF SERVICE REQUEST NUMBER 2. SEVERAL NEW PROJECTS HAVE BEEN INITIATED SINCE THE PUBLISHING OF THE LAST QUARTER LY REPORT. IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION THE PATHOLOGY SECTION HAS IN ITIATED STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF TOTAL BODY METABOLISM ON LYMPHOID TIS SUE FOLLOWING X-IRRADIATION (PROJECT NO. 00012). IN THE BIOCHEMISTRY D IVISION THE ENZYME CHEMISTRY SECTION HAS BEGUN A STUDY OF THE EFFECT O F ANTIBIOTICS ON THE HYALURONIC ACID SYSTEM (PROJECT NO. 10015). THE R ADIOBIOLOGY DIVISION HAS INAUGURATED TWO NEW PROJECTS IN ITS TOLERANCE SECTION: ONE, THE DETECTION OF ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION EXCITED IN WATER EXPOSED TO RADIATION (PROJECT NO. 30025) AND, TWO, LETHAL DOSE DETERM INATIONS (PROJECT NO. 30026). THE WORK OF THE COLORIMETRIC DOSIMETRY S ECTION HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED FROM THE LUNG TRANSPORT SECTION (20016) PH ARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY DIVISION TO ITS OWN PROJECT NUMBER (40046) I N THE INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE DIVISION. ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO THE COMPLE TED WORK IN STUDIES OF THE DESTRUCTION OF X-RAYED HEMATOPOIETIC CELLS OF TADPOLES (UCLA-93); THE RELATION OF MITOSIS TO X-RAY DAMAGE IN TAD POLES (UCLA-94); THE ULTIMATE SITE OF SKELETAL DEPOSITION OF STRONTIUM AND LEAD (UCLA-96); THE MEASUREMENT OF CARDIAC OUTPUT AND THORACIC BL OOD VOLUME BY THE CONSTANT INFUSION METHOD (UCLA-97); THE SYNTHESIS OF STRAIGHT-CHAIN MONO-ENOIC FATTY ACIDS (UCL-98); THE ACUTE AND CHRONIC TOXICITY OF TOLUIDINE BLUE AND RELATED AND DYES (UCLA-100); THE EFFEC T OF TOPICALLY APPLIED ADRENERGIC BLOCKING AGENTS UPON THE PERIPHERAL VASCULAR SYSTEM (UCLA-101); AND THE EFFECT OF HISTAMINES AND ANTIHIST AMINES ON THE COAGULATION OF NORMAL AND HEPARINIZED RABBIT PLASMA (UCL A-102). UCLA REPORT PUBLISHED DURING THIS QUARTER INCLUDE THE FOLLOWIN G UNCLASSIFIED RESEARCH PROJECT REPORTS: UCLA 93,94,96,97,98,100,101, AND 102. THE READER'S ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO THE SECTION OF THIS RE PORT DISCUSSING THE WORK OF THE RADIOBIOLOGY DIVISION IN WHICH A DESCR IPTION IS GIVEN OF THE INSTALLATION AND CALIBRATION OF A NEW 250 KVP P ICKER INDUSTRIAL TYPE X-RAY UNIT. THIS INSTALLATION TOGETHER WITH THE EXISTING EQUIPMENT PROVIDES FOR THE IRRADIATION OF AN EXPERIMENTAL SU BJECT FROM BOTH ABOVE AND BELOW SIMULTANEOUSLY.
