Description/Abstract:
THE SOILS OF FOUR INTENSIVE STUDY AREAS LOCATED ALONG THE FALLOUT PATH WAY OF TRINITY, THE FIRST NUCLEAR DETONATION, WERE SAMPLED TO DETERMIN E SOIL PLUTONIUM CONCENTRATIONS AS A FUNCTION OF DISTANCE FROM GROUND ZERO AND SOIL DEPTH. ABOUT HALF OF THE PLUTONIUM 239,240 IN TRINITY S ITE SOILS WAS FOUND AT THE 5-20 CENTIMETER DEPTH IN 1973 COMPARED TO T OTAL PLUTONIUM INVENTORIES FOUND ONLY IN THE UPPER 5 CENTIMETER OF SOI L ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO. SOIL PLUTONIUM CONCENTRATIONS OF SAMPLES COLLECT ED AT THE SAME DEPTH OF EACH STUDY AREA GENERALLY EXHIBITED COEFFICIEN TS OF VARIATION GREATER THAN 1.2. MAXIMUM PENETRATION DEPTHS OF PLUTON IUM 239,240 INTO TRINITY SITE SOILS WERE RELATED TO THE PRESENCE OF SU BSOIL HORIZONS CONTAINING CARBONATE ACCUMULATIONS AND THE MAXIMUM EXTE NT OF RAINWATER PENETRATION INTO THESE SOIL PROFILES. INCREASED AMOUNT S OF PLUTONIUM WERE ASSOCIATED WITH LESS THAN 100 MICRONS FRACTIONS AS DISTANCE FROM GROUND ZERO AND SOIL DEPTH INCREASED. THE LESS THAN 100 MICRONS FRACTION CONTAINED 1.2 AND 89 PERCENT OF THE PLUTONIUM IN THE TOPSOIL AT THE STUDY AREAS LOCATED 1.6 AN 44 KILOMETERS FROM GROUND Z ERO, RESPECTIVELY. TOTAL AMOUNTS OF PLUTONIUM 239,240 IN THE LESS THAN 100 MICRONS SOIL SIZE FRACTIONS ALSO GENERALLY INCREASED WITH DEPTH, AT 1.6 KILOMETERS FROM GROUND ZERO, THIS SIZE FRACTION CONTAINED 1.2 PERCENT AND 13 PERCENT OF PLUTONIUM 239,240 FOUND AT THE 0-2.5 AND 5. O-10 CENTIMETER DEPTHS, RESPECTIVELY. THE SOIL PLUTONIUM DATA COLLECTE D AT TRINITY SITE IS DISCUSSED RELATIVE TO THE SIZES OF TRINTIY FALLOU T PARTICLES, SETTING MEANINGFUL HEALTH STANDARDS FOR PLUTONIUM IN SOIL S, AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF PLUTONIUM IN THE BIOTA OF TRINITY SITE ECOS YSTEMS.
