Description/Abstract:
GEOPHYSICAL METHODS WERE USED TO DETERMINE THE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF ALLUVIUM IN THE FRENCHMAN LAKE AREA, NEVADA TEST SITE, IN CONNECTI ON WITH SHOT SMALL BOY. PERIODIC MEASUREMENTS MADE AT TWO LOCATIONS IN DICATED THAT THE EFFECTS OF WEATHER ON THE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF NEAR-SURFACE ALLUVIUM WERE QUITE SMALL DURING SEVERAL MONTHS PRIOR TO SHOT SMALL BOY. NATURAL LATERAL VARIATIONS IN ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF SHALLOW ALLUVIUM WERE MAPPED BY MAKING NUMEROUS MEASUREMENTS ALONG BURIED CABLE LINES. ARTIFICIAL CHANGES IN ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY BROU GHT ABOUT BY BACKFILLING INSTRUMENTED TRENCHES WERE INVESTIGATED BY MA KING MEASUREMENTS ACROSS THE TRENCHES. THE THICKNESS AND ELECTRICAL CO NDUCTIVITY OF NATURAL ( ) LAYERS WERE DETERMINED AT A LIMITED NUMBER O F LOCATIONS BY INTERPRETING VERTICAL ( ) PROFILES TO DEPTHS OF SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET. POSTSHOT MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT S OF THE SHOT ON ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF NEAR-SURFACE ALLUVIUM.
