Description/Abstract:
THE BANEBERRY EVENT WAS AN UNDERGROUND WEAPONS TEST CONDUCTED AT THE N EVADA TEST SITE ON THE MORNING OF 18 DECEMBER 1970. ACCIDENTAL VENTING OCCURRED, PRODUCING A CLOUD OF RADIOACTIVITY WHICH MOYED OVER CENTRAL AND NORTHERN NEVADA INTON UTAH. AT THE TIME OF THE BANEBERRY VENTING, THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH'S DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGICAL HEALTH AND THE BI OMEDICAL DIVISION OF THE LAWRENCE RADIATION LABORATORY WERE CONDUCTING COOPERATIVE RADIOECOLOGICAL STUDIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF UTAH. THE SE STUDIES WERE DESIGNED TO DOCUMENT THE DISTRIBUTION AND MOVEMENT OF RADIONUCLIDES IN AGRICULTURAL AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS IN THE STATE OF UTAH. AS PART OF A PROGRAM OF ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLING, AN AIR SAMPLING NETWORK HAD BEEN ACTIVATED ON 30 OCTOBER 1970, AND FILTER SAMPLES WER E OBTAINED THROUGH 11 DECEMBER 1970. THESE SAMPLES, WHEN COMPARED WITH THOSE OBTAINED DURING PASSAGE OF THE BANEBERRY CLOUD, ENABLE A PRECIS E DESCRIPTION OF THE RADIOACTIVITY PRESENT IN THE STATE OF UTAH. RADIO ANALYSES WERE MADE ON AIR FILTERS, WATER, VEGETATION, AND ANIMAL ORGAN S OBTAINED SUBSEQUENT TO THE PASSAGE OF THE BANEBERRY CLOUD. ANALYSES WERE MADE BY CONVENTIONAL NAL SCINTILLATION CRYSTAL AND GERMANIUM ( LI THIUM ) SOLID-STATE GAMMA SPECTROSCOPY. PRE- AND POST-BANEBERRY AIR RA DIOACTIVITY LEVELS WILL BE COMPARED. RADIOISOTOPE DATA RADIONUCLIDES W ILL BE GIVEN FOR AIR FILTERS EXPOSED DURING PASSAGE OF THE BANEBERRY C LOUD, WHICH CONTAINED A HIGHLY FRACTIONATED NUCLEAR DEBRIS. THE CONCEN TRATION OF IODINE-131 IN THYROID GLANDS OF DEER, SHEEP, AND RABBITS WA S ALSO MEASURED SUBSEQUENT TO THE BANEBERRY EVENT. THE BUILDUP AND DEC AY OF IODINE-131 IN VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTS IN UTAH WILL BE DESCRIBED. A LARGE SAMPLE OF SHEEP THYROID GLANDS OBTAINED NEAR GARRISON, UTAH, IN MID-JANUARY 1971 WAS FOUND TO CONTAIN LOW BUT QUANTITABLE LEVELS OF IO DINE-131. AN ANALYSIS OF THE HUMAN HAZARD AS THE RESULT OF THE BANEBER RY VENTING BASED ON ACTUAL MEASUREMENTS AND CONDITIONS DURING CLOUD PA SSAGE, AND ON PREDICTIVE MODELS, WILL BE MADE. DOSE CALCULATIONS FOR V ARIOUS RADIOISOTOPES HAVE BEEN MADE FOR A CHILD LIVING IN NORTHERN UTA H.-3
