Description/Abstract:
CALCULATIONS OF FISSION-PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION IN FALLOUT FOR THE SMALL BOY EVENT HAVE BEEN MADE USING A CONDENSED-STATE DIFFUSION-CONTROLLED FISSION-PRODUCT ABSORPTION MODEL. THE PROPERTIES OF CALCULATED FISSION -PRODUCT INVENTORIES IN PARTICLES WITH SIZE DISTRIBUTION SUPPLIED CORR ELATED REASONABLY WELL WITH PROPERTIES OF ACTUAL SMALL BOY FALLOUT INV ENTORIES. AN EVALUATION OF THESE INVENTORIES USING THE DELFIC FISSION- PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IS BEING MADE. HENRY'S LAW HAS BEEN DEMONS TRATED TO BE APPLICABLE TO THE SYSTEM CESIUM/OXYTEN/CALCIUM OXIDE-ALUM INUM OXIDE-SILICON OXIDE EUTECTIC. THE DERIVED HENRY'S LAW CONSTANTS H AVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE INDEPENDENT OF THE OXYGEN PRESSURE (1 GREATER THA N OR EQUAL TO THE PRESSURE OF OXYGEN (ATM) GREATER THAN APPROXIMATELY 10E-4) AND OF WATER PRESSURE (0.03 GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO PRESSURE O F WATER (ATM) GREATER THAN APPROXIMATELY 10E-4). THE DIFFUSION COEFFIC IENTS OF CESIUM IN SMALL BOY SOIL HAVE BEEN MEASURED. THESE MEASUREMEN TS PROVIDE SOME JUSTIFICATION FOR EMPLOYING DIFFUSION COEFFICIENTS OF FISSION PRODUCTS IN CALCIUM OXIDE-ALUMINUM OXIDE-SILICON OXIDE EUTECTI C FOR THE SMALL BOY CALCULATIONS. STUDIES OF DIFFUSION COEFFICIENTS OF FISSION PRODUCTS CREATED IN SITU IN SILICATE MATRICES HAVE BEEN INITI ATED. SOME PRELIMINARY FISSION-PRODUCT LEACHING STUDIES HAVE BEEN MADE . A PROGRAM FOR STUDYING THE LEACHING OF RECOILED FISSION PRODUCTS FRO M SILICATES IS OUTLINED. MASS SPECTROMETRIC KNUDSEN CELL STUDIES HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE APPARENT IMPORTANCE OF SUCH SPECIES AS CERIUM OXIDE, PRASEODYIUM OXIDE, NIOBIUM OXIDE, TECHNETIUM OXIDE TO FALLOUT FORMATIO N PROCESSES.
