Description/Abstract:
ATOMIC-BLAST EXPOSURE TESTS ON COMMERCIAL COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT WER E CONDUCTED DURING OPERATION TEAPOT, APPLE II SHOT. THESE TESTS WERE M ADE TO PROVIDE CIVIL DEFENSE PLANNERS WITH DATA FOR QUALITATIVE PREDIC TIONS OF THE PROBABLE SURVIVAL RANGE, THE EXTENT OF DAMAGE, AND NATURE OF REPAIRS REQUIRED TO RESTORE COMMUNICATION SERVICE AFTER A BLAST. A PPROXIMATELY 150 WIDELY DIVERSIFIED UNITS OF COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT ( MAINLY ELECTRONIC, BUT INCLUDING SIRENS ) WERE EXPOSED, UNDER THE SP ONSORSHIP OF THE RADIO-ELECTRONICS - TELEVISION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIAT ION ( RETMA ), TWO SIREN MANUFACTURERS AND THE FEDERAL CIVIL DEFENSE A DMINISTRATION ( FCDA ). EXPOSED ITEMS WERE IN OR NEAR GROUPS OF STRUCT URES LOCATED AT APPROXIMATELY 4700 AND 10,500 FEET FROM GROUND ZERO. W HERE POSSIBLE, IDENTICAL PRODUCTS WERE EXPOSED AT THESE TWO LOCATIONS, SO THAT ONE SET OF ITEMS WOULD BE SUBJECTED TO MODERATELY SEVERE DAMA GE AND THE OTHER SET TO LIGHT DAMAGE. TESTS SHOWED THAT COMMERCIAL COM MUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT WAS GENERALLY MORE RESISTANT TO NUCLEAR EXPLOSIO N DAMAGE THAN THE STRUCTURES IN AND NEAR WHICH THE PRODUCTS WERE EXPOS ED. ADDITIONS CONCERNING COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT WERE PROPOSED TO SUP PLEMENT FCDA PUBLISHED STATEMENTS CONCERNING " BLAST DAMAGE FRON NUCLE AR WEAPONS OF LARGER SIZES. "
