Description/Abstract:
NAVAL AIRBORNE RADIAC EQUIPMENT OF THE FOLLOWING TYPES WAS TESTED AND EVALUATED IN CONJUNCTION WITH FIVE ATOMIC DETONATIONS: AN/ADR-1 AUTOMA TIC RECORDING DOSIMETERS; AN/ADR-4 GROUND INTENSITY SURVEY EQUIPMENT; AN/USQ-1 AND AN/ARR-20 GAMMA INTENSITY TELEMETERING SYSTEM GAMMA INTEN SITY DROPPABLE FLASHING LIGHT UNITS; GAMMA INTENSITY PYROTECHNIC FLARE S. THE AN/ADR-1 RECORDING DOSIMETERS PROVIDED GAMMA INTENSITY CONTOURS AT ALTITUDE. EXTRAPOLATION OF THESE CURVES TO GROUND LEVEL GAVE VALUE S FOR GROUND GAMMA INTENSITY WHICH APPEAR TO BE CORRECT WITHIN AN ORDE R OF MAGNITUDE. THE AN/ADR-4 GROUND INTENSITY SURVEY EQUIPMENT GAVE PA TTERNS FOR GROUND INTENSITY WHICH WERE NOT IN CLOSE AGREEMENT WITH THO SE DETERMINED ON THE GROUND. HOWEVER THE INTRODUCTION OF A SCALE FACTO R OF DIVIDING BY 1.8 GIVES A REASONABLE AGREEMENT. THE AN/USQ-1 AND AN /ARR-29 TELEMETERING SYSTEM WAS COMPLETELY UNSATISFACTORY, THE ANTENNA E OF THE AN/USQ-1 TRANSMITTING UNITS FAILING TO ERECT PROPERLY. THE GA MMA INTENSITY DROPPABLE FLASHING LIGHT UNITS POSSESSED INSUFFICIENT LI GHT EMISSION TO BE DETECTABLE AT 2000 FEET ALTITUDE UNLESS THE LOCATIO N OF THE UNITS WAS PRECISELY KNOWN. THE DROPPABLE GAMMA INTENSITY FLAR ES EITHER DID NOT OPERATE PROPERLY OR FAILED TO FALL IN A SUFFICIENTLY HIGH INTENSITY AREA TO BE ACTIVATED. ONLY TWO OF THESE UNITS WERE AVA ILABLE FOR DROP AND THE RESULTS ARE INCONCLUSIVE. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR THE LIMITED DEVELOPMENT OF THE FOREGOING EQUIPMENTS FOR EXPER
