Description/Abstract:
THIS IS THE FINAL REPORT COVERING PHASED I AND II OF PROJECT 9.6 ( CUB IC CORPORATION ). PROJECT 9.6 WAS ESTABLISHED TO PROVIDE TRACKING AND POSITIONING DATA FOR THE ROCKETS AND PODS EMPLOYED IN THE FISH BOWL NU CLEAR TEST SERIES. A NINE-TARGET ELECTRONIC TRACKING SYSTEM WAS DESIGN ED, FABRICATED, INSTALLED, AND OPERATED ON JOHNSTON ISLAND. THIS REPOR T DESCRIBES IN DETAIL THE TRACKING EQUIPMENT DESIGN, AND PRESENTS TRAC KING RESULTS FOR THE TIGER FISH, BLUE GILL, STAR FISH, STAR FISH PRIME , BLUE GILL PRIME, BLUE GILL DOUBLE PRIME, CHECK MATE, BLUE GILL TRIPL E PRIME, KING FISH, AND TIGHT ROPE SHOTS IN THAT ORDER. THE VEHICLES T RACKED RANGED IN SIZE FROM THE LARGE INSTRUMENT PODS CARRIED ALOFT BY THE THOR MISSILE DOWN TO VERY SMALL NIKE CAJUN SOUNDING ROCKETS. OTHER UNITS TRACKED WERE TH XM-33, HONEST JOHN NIKE, THE HONEST JOHN NIKE N IKE, AND THE JAVELIN ROCKETS. THE TRACKING EQUIPMENT PROVIDED WAS USED TO DETERMINE THE TRAJECTORIES OF THE SCIENTIFIC PASSENGER PODS CARRIE D BY THOR MISSILES WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF ACCURACY AND THE TRAJECTORIES OF SOME OF THE ROCKETS CARRYING SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS FOR PROJECTS 6 .1A, 6.3, 6.4, AND 6.7 TO A LOWER ( 5 PERCENT ) ACCURACY. TRACKING EQU IPMENTS USED WERE OF THREE GENERAL TYPES: ( 1 ) DISTANCE MEASURING EQ UIPMENT ( DME ) CAPABLE OF TRACKING NINE TARGETS SIMULTANEOUSLY TO A R ANGE OF 1,000 MILES WITH A PRECISION OF 10 METERS; ( 2 ) ANGLE MEASURI NG EQUIPMENT ( AME ) WHICH TRACKED THREE TARGETS SIMULTANEOUSLY TO DIS TANCES OF 1,000 MILES WITH A PRECISION OF 0.1 MILLIRADIAN OR BETTER, A ND ( 3 ) AUTOMATIC GIMBALLED-ANTENNA VECTORING EQUIPMENT ( AGAVE ), A LOWER ACCURACY BUT LOWER COST ANGLE MEASURING DEVICE, WHICH CRACKED SI X TARGETS AT ONE TIME WITH AN ACCURACY OF A HALF DEGREE. AN AME-DME CO BINATION WAS USED FOR THE HIGHER ACCURACY TRACKING ( PODS ); THE AGAVE -DME COMBINATION, FOR THE LOWER ACCURACY TRACKING REQUIREMENTS ( ROCKE TS ). TRACKING DATA FROM EACH TARGET WAS RECORDED ON MAGNETIC TAPE IN DIGITAL FORM 10 TIMES PER SECOND. THIS DATA WAS PROCESSED USING A CDC 160 COMPUTER ON SITE AND TABULATED AT 1-SECOND INTERVALS FOR EACH VEHI CLE. FULL TRAJECTORY DATA WAS OBTAINED ON 74 PER CENT OF ALL OBJECTS A TTEMPTED. PERTINENT MATHEMATICS USED IN THE DATA PROCESSING ARE ELUCID ATED IN A SERIES OF APPENDIXES. DATA PROCESSING FACILITIES AND TECHNIQ UES ARE EXPLAINED TO PROVIDE A REFERENCE FOR SIMILAR OPERATIONS IN THE FUTURE. THE TABULATED AND GRAPHIC RESULTS OF THE TRAJECTORY DATA PROC ESSING WERE COMPILED AND DISTRIBUTED TO THE AGENCIES CONCERNED AS LIST ED IN APPENDIX P OF THIS REPORT. A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO DATA PR OCESSING WAS THE ORIGINAL DEVELOPMENT OF A METHOD OF ANALYTICALLY CALI BRATING THE ANGLE MEASURING EQUIPMENT ( AME ), THUS PROMISING TO EXTEN D THE USEFULNESS AND ACCURACY OF THIS EQUIPMENT. IF THE THREE LOSSES A TTRIBUTED TO CATASTROPHIC ROCKET FAILURE ARE NEGLECTED. PHASE II TRACK
