Description/Abstract:
THIS PROJECT INVOLVED THE MEASUREMENT OF THE LOADING, STRAIN, DEFORMAT ION, AND DAMAGE TO THE HULL OF A SUBMARINE-LIKE TARGET RESULTING FROM PLANNED NEAR LETHAL ATTACK DURING SHOT UMBRELLA. IT ALSO INVOLVED THE MEASUREMENT OF HULL STRAINS IN AN OPERATING SUBMARINE IN SIMULATED ATT ACK POSITIONS DURING SHOTS WAHOO AND UMBRELLA. THE OBJECTIVES ESTABLIS HED FOR THIS PROJECT WERE (1) TO DETERMINE THE RANGE FOR LETHAL HULL D AMAGE TO A SUBMARINE-LIKE TARGET UNDER ATTACK IN SHALLOW WATER BY AN A NTISUBMARINE NUCLEAR WEAPON (2) TO STUDY THE PROCESS OF HULL DAMAGE TO A SUBMERGED TARGET FOR CORRELATION WITH OBSERVED PRESSURE AND EXISTING APPROXIMATE THEORIES AND EMPIRICAL FORMULAS; AND (3) TO DETERMINE THE RESPONSE OF THE HULL OF A SUBMARINE IN SIMULATED ATTACK POSITION IN BO TH DEEP AND SHALLOW WATER.
