Description/Abstract:
SOME OF THE APPARENT CONCLUSIONS OF THIS PROJECT ARE (1) LOW-YIELD, LO W-ALTITUDE DEVICES DO NOT LEND THEMSELVES TO A STUDY BY RESONANCE SCAT TER TECHNIQUES; (2) DEVICES SUCH AS KING FISH, STAR FISH, VERY HIGH YI ELD WEAPONS AT 50 KM OR HIGHER, AND LOW-YIELD WEAPONS SALTED WITH AN A PPROPRIATE MATERIAL, GIVEN DEBRIS CONCENTRATIONS WHICH CAN BE FOLLOWED FOR MANY DAYS AND OVER WIDE GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS; (3) AN INVENTORY OF MA TERIAL CANNOT BE MADE WITH A NEUTRAL SPECIES, UNLESS THE DEGREE OF ION IZATION IS ESTABLISHED BY INDEPENDENT TECHNIQUES. ANOTHER SPECIES FOR WHICH THE NEUTRAL AND IONIZED STATE CAN BE OBSERVED SHOULD LARGELY REM OVE THIS UNCERTAINTY; (4) DIFFUSION IS AN IMPORTANT MECHANISM FOR THE LONG-TERM SPREAD OF DEBRIS OVER WIDE AREAS; (5) EARLY TIME OBSERVATION S WERE MADE BUT HAVE NOT BEEN STUDIED. THIS DATA INCLUDES TIGHT ROPE A ND SOME OF THE AIR DROPS. TEN SITES WERE EQUIPPED TO OBSERVE RESONANCE-SCATTERED SUNLIGHT FROM S SELECTED DEBRIS SPECIES. THESE SPECIES WERE IONIZED AND NEUTRAL BARIUM , AND NEUTRAL ZIRCONIUM. THE MEASUREMENTS WERE PERFORMED DURING TWILIG HT PERIODS WHEN THE SKY BACKGROUND WAS LOW AND DEBRIS IN THE HIGH ATMO SPHERE WAS SUNLIT. IN GENERAL, DEBRIS WAS DETECTABLE BY THIS TECHNIQUE ONLY ABOVE HEIGHTS OF APPROXIMATELY NINETY KM. BARIUM AND ZIRCONIUM WE RE OBSERVED IN SMALL AMOUNTS IN THE JOHNSTON ISLAND AREA AFTER CHECK M ATE, KING FISH, AND STAR FISH. ATE, KING FISH, AND STAR FISH. THE MEASUREMENTS PERFORMED ON THE FIRST TWILIGHT FOLLOWING STAR FISH AND KING FISH AND INDICATIVE OF THE DETON ATION-INDUCED MOTIONS OF DEBRIS. MEASUREMENTS ON SUBSEQUENT TWILIGHTS GAVE INFORMATION ON THE SPREAD OF DEBRIS BY DIFFUSION AND WIND TRANSPO RT.
