Description/Abstract:
A PRIME OBJECTIVE OF THE EXPERIMENT WAS THE QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENT O F THE ATTENUATION SUFFERED BY RADAR BEAMS PASSING NEAR OR THROUGH THE FIREBALL OF A NUCLEAR DETONATION. DURING THE TEST SERIES, MEASUREMENT S WERE ALSO MADE OF EFFECTS PRODUCED IN REGIONS NOT DIRECTLY ASSOCIATE D WITH THE FIREBALL PROPER. A SECOND PRIM OBJECTIVE OF THE EXPERIMENT WAS TO INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE PHASE DIFFERENCES WHICH WERE EXPECTED TO D EVELOP IN NEARLY PARALLEL RADAR RAYS PASSING THROUGH IONIZED REGIONS. BALLISTIC ROCKETS WERE USED TO PLACE CW BEACONS, RADIATING AT 1-, 5-, AND 10-KMC FREQUENCIES. FIVE RECEIVING STATIONS, FOUR ON SHIPS AND ON E ON JOHNSTON ISLAND, MADE SIGNAL STRENGTH MEASUREMENTS. AN INTERFERO METER ON THE ISLAND MADE PHASE-FRONT MEASUREMENTS AT 1- AND 5-KMC. THIS REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF PROJECT 6.1 PARTICIPATION IN THE B LUE GILL, KING FISH, AND TIGHT ROPE EVENTS OF THE FISH BOWL SERIES. TH E PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF HIGH-ALTITUDE NUC LEAR DETONATIONS ON ABM RADAR FREQUENCIES. PRIMARY MEASUREMENTS INCLUD ED TIME FUNCTIONS OF (1) ATTENUATION THROUGH THE FIREBALL AND ASSOCIAT ED IONIZED REGIONS, AND (2) REFRACTIVE EFFECTS PRODUCED BY THE DETONAT ION. BALLISTIC ROCKETS WERE USED TO PLACE CW BEACONS, RADIATING AT 1-, 5-, AND 10-KMC FREQUENCIES. FIVE RECEIVING STATIONS, FOUR ON SHIPS AN D ONE ON JOHNSTON ISLAND, MADE SIGNAL STRENGTH MEASUREMENTS. AN INTERF EROMETER ON THE ISLAND MADE PHASE-FRONT MEASUREMENTS AT 1 AND 5 KMC.
