Description/Abstract:
THE RADIATION DOSE COMMITMENT TO TEN BODY ORGANS/PARTS, DUE TO INHALAT ION OF RESUSPENDED NUCLEAR CONTAMINANTS FROM TARGET SHIPS EXPOSED TO T HE UNDERWATER BUST (TEST BAKER) IS DETERMINED FOR PERSONNEL WHO WORKED ON THE SHIPS DURING AND AFTER OPERATIONS CROSSROADS. FOUR REPRESENTATI VE SHIPS, INDEPENDENCE, NEW YORK, PENSACOLA, AND SALT LAKE CITY, ARE E XAMINED FOR THE PERSONNEL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH POST-BAKER REBOAR DING. ADDITIONALLY, THE DOSE DUE TO INTERNAL EMITTERS IS ASSESSED FOR PERSONNEL WHO UNLOAD AMMUNITION FROM TWENTY TARGET SHIPS AT KWAJALEIN, FOR PERSONNEL ENGAGED IN MAINTENANCE AND SECURITY OF THE ENTIRE REMAI NING TARGET FLEET AT KWAJALEIN, AND FOR SHIPYARD WORKERS EXPOSED TO EI GHT OF THE HIGHER INTENSITY SHIPS AT PEARL HARBOR, PUGET SOUND, AND SA N FRANCISCO NAVAL SHIPYARDS. FOR ALMOST ALL ACTIVITIES, FIFTY-YEAR BO NE DOSE COMMITMENTS ARE LESS THAN 0.15 REM FROM ANY ANNUAL PERIOD OF E XPOSURE. A REDUCTION INDICATES THAT THE EARLY EXPANSION OF THE STAR FISH DEBRIS PROBABLY TOOK THE FORM OF AN ELLIPSOID WITH ITS MAJOR AXIS ORIENTED AL ONG THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD LINES. COLLAPSE OF THE MAGNETIC BUBBLE WAS COMPLETE IN APPROXIMATELY 16 SECONDS, AND PART OF THE FISSION FRAG MENT BETA PARTICLES WERE SUBSEQUENTLY INJECTED INTO TRAPPED ORBITS.
