Description/Abstract:
CURVES OF ABSORPTION OF GAMMA RAYS IN BORON CARBIDE AND A FEW POINTS O N THE ABSORPTION CURVE IN LEAD WERE OBTAINED DURING THE THREE ATOMIC E XPLOSIONS OF OPERATION SANDSTONE. RADIATION WAS DETECTED BY INTEGRATI NG IONIZATION CHAMBERS AND BY PHOTOGRAPHIC EMULSIONS. A FEW RECORDING -TYPE IONIZATION CHAMBERS WERE USED TO GIVE INTENSITIES AS A FUNCTION OF TIME. RADIATION DETECTORS WERE LOCATED INSIDE OF SHELTERS WHICH PR OTECTED THEM FROM BLAST AND SHIELDED THEM FROM SCATTERED RADIATION. T UBES THROUGH THE WALLS OF THESE SHELTERS WHICH FACED THE ZERO TOWERS S ERVED AS COLLIMATORS. SOME OF THESE TUBES WERE AIMED AT THE CABS ATOP THE ZERO TOWERS AND OTHERS WERE DIRECTED AT SEVERAL ANGLES OF ELEVATI ON ABOVE THE CABS. TO GET THE ABSORPTION CURVE AT A GIVEN ANGLE OF EL EVATION, DIFFERENT THICKNESSES OF ABSORBER WERE LOADED INTO THE COLLIM ATING TUBES AT THAT ANGLE, AND THE OBSERVED INTENSITY OF RADIATION TOG ETHER WITH THE ABSORBER THICKNESS IN A GIVEN BEAM DEFINED A POINT ON T HE ABSORPTION CURVE. INTENSITY MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN AT A POSITION SEVERAL FEET FROM ABSORBERS IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE THE GEOMETRY FOR RADI ATION SCATTERED BY THE ABSORBER. BECAUSE OF GEOMETRY, SCATTERED RADIA TION WAS NEGLIGIBLE AND THE ANALYSIS OF ABSORPTION CURVES YIELDS THE T RUE TOTAL ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT FOR THE RADIATION.
