Description/Abstract:
OPERATION IVY WAS INSTRUMENTEDFD FOR THE MASS-MOTION METHOD OF PRESSUR E MEASUREMENT IN A MANNER SIMILAR TO THAT USED ON OPERATIONS BUSTER-JA NGLE AND TUMBLER-SNAPPER. LOW-ALTITUDE PYROTECHNIC MORTAR BURSTS AND HIGH-ALTITUDE GUN BURSTS (ON MIKE ONLY) LABELED THE AIR FOR PHOTOGRAPH IC RECORDING. THE METHODS OF INSTRUMENTATION ARE DESCRIBED; THE METHO D OF DATA ANALYSIS IS OUTLINED; AND DERIVED DATA ON TIME OF ARRIVAL, P EAK MATERIAL VELOCITY, PEAK SHOCK VELOCITY, AND PEAK OVER-PRESSURE ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR AND GRAPHICAL FORM. APPENDIXES PRESENT METEOROL OGICAL AND BALLISTIC DATA AND CALCULATIONS. AN OUTSTANDING CONCLUSION OF THE EXPERIMENT IS THE LOWNESS OF PEAK OVERPRESSURES NEAR THE SURFA CE COMPARED WITH THE PEAK OVERPRESSURES AT ALTITUDES UP TO 25,000 FT B ECAUSE OF THE EFFECT OF THE ATMOSPHERIC INHOMOGENEITY AT LONG RANGES. THE MASS-MOTION TECHNIQUE OFFERS A USEFUL DIAGNOSTIC TOOL FOR THE DET ERMINATION OF TOTAL HYDRODYNAMIC YIELD.
