Description/Abstract:
LOW-RESOLUTION SPECTROGRAPHS WHICH PROVIDED VARYING DEGREES OF TIME RE SOLUTION WERE OPERATED SUCCESSFULLY AT OPERATION UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE. THE DATA HAVE BEEN STUDIED TO DETERMINE THE TIME AND SPACE VARIATION OF F IREBALL SPECTRA. THE DENSITY AND TIME HISTORY OF THE ABSORBING GASES NITRIC OXIDE, NITRIC ACID, OZONE, OXYGEN SURROUNDING THE EXPLOSION WER E OBTAINED, AND OTHER STRUCTURE PRESENT IN EACH EXPLOSION WAS IDENTIFI ED AND STUDIED. COLOR TEMPERATURES WERE ALSO CALCULATED FOR EACH EXPL OSION. THE SPECTRA FOR ALL SHOTS EXCEPT THE (WORD DELETED) SHOWED CHA RACTERISTIC STRUCTURE DUE TO ABSORPTION BY NITRIC ACID, NITRIC OXIDE, AND OZONE. ALL SHOTS SHOWED THE PRESENCE OF IRON, BARIUM, SODIUM, ALU MINUM, AND ALO AFTER THE SECOND MAXIMUM, EXCEPT THE (WORD DELETED) IN WHICH THESE MATERIALS WERE PRESENT VERY EARLY. THE AVERAGE COLOR TEMP ERATURE OBTAINED AT THE SECOND MAXIMUM WAS ABOUT 5000 DEGREES KELVIN; AT MINUMUM, ABOUT 1400 DEGREES KELVIN. THE FIRST-MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES VARIED FROM 4500 TO 14,000 DEGREES KELVIN.
