Description/Abstract:
THE GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF AN UNDERWATER NUCLEAR EXPLOSION ARE DES CRIBED EMPHASIZING THE MECHANISMS BY WHICH THE FISSION PRODUCTS AND IN DUCED ACTIVITY ARE RELEASED INTO THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT AS A FUNCTION OF YIELD AND CHARGE DEPTH. THE EXPLOSION PRODUCT HISTORY IS FOLLOWED THROUGHOUT THE DYNAMIC EVENT TERMINATING IN THE DEFINITION OF THE RES IDUAL POOL OF RADIOACTIVITY IN THE SURFACE LAYERS. ESITMATES ARE MADE OF FRACTIONATION OF THE FISSION PRODUCT MIXTURE DUE TO HYDRODYNAMIC P HENOMENA.
