Description/Abstract:
SINCE 1958, THE MARINE RESEARCH LABORATORY OF THE NORWEGIAN DIRECTORTA TE OF FISHERIES HAS CARRIED OUT ROUTINE CONTROL OF THE TOTAL BETA ACTI VITY OF A NUMBER OF COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT MARINE FOOD PRODUCTS. THE MEASUREMENTS ARE MADE ON ASHED SAMPLES USING A LOW LEVEL COUNTING EQU IPMENT CALIBRATED WITH POTASSIUM-40. EXAMPLES OF THE MEASUREMENT RESU LTS ARE PRESENTED IN DIAGRAMS. THE TOTAL BETA ACTIVITY OF FISH HAS VA RIED BETWEEN ( 8-28 ) E 03 PCI/PR KG, WITH SIMILAR PATTERNS OF VARIATI ION FOR THE MEASURED SPECIES. THE CONTAMINATION IS APPROXIMATELY ESTI MATED AS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOTAL BETA ACTIVITY AND POTASIUM-40 AC TIVITY, THE LAST BEING CALCULATED FROM SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS . THE CONTAMINATION OF COD HAS VARIED BETWEEN 0 - 22 E 03 PCI/PR KG. THE RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH FALLOUT MEASUREMENTS MADE AT THE NEARES T NORWEGIAN LAND STATIONS. THE POTASSIUM CONTENT OF FISH VARIES SEASO NALLY BETWEEN 30 AND 100 MG PER GRAM OF ASH. THE VARIATIONS SHOW A SL IGHT BUT SIGNIFICANT NEGATIVE CORRELATION WITH THE RADIOACTIVE CONTAMI NATION, INDICATING THAT BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES AFFECT THE ACCUMULATION O F RADIONUCLIDES. SAMPLES OF FISH MEAL CONSISTING MAINLY OF RESIDUES F ROM FISH FILLETING PLANTS IN NORTHERN NORWAY HAVE BEEN MEASURED AT THE SAME TIME AS THE CORRESPONDING FISH SAMPLES. THE FISH MEAL SHOWS THE SAME VARIATIONS AS THE FISH SAMPLES, BUT THE CONTAMINATION LEVELS ARE MUCH LOWER, INDICATING THAT BONE-SEEKING RADIONUCLIDES DO NOT CONTRIB UTE VERY MUCH TO THE TOTAL CONTAMINATION OF FISH. STRONTIUM-90 ANALYS ES OF SELECTED SAMPLES OF COD SHOWED LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO 0.3 PLUS OR MINUS 0.3 SU IN 1962.
