Description/Abstract:
ACANTHARIA ARE PERHAPS UNIQUE ANIMALS WITH RESPECT TO ABSOLUTE AND SPE CIFIC CAPACITY TO ABSORB STRONTIUM FROM THE MEDIUM. THIS HAS BEEN DEM ONSTRATED BY SPECTROGRAPHIC AND X-RAY - INVESTIGATIONS OF THE SPICULAE FORMING THEIR SKELETONS, MADE OF CELESTITE MONOCRYSTALS. IT IS ASSUM ED THAT ALSO RADIOACTIVES ISOTOPES OF STRONTIUM FROM FALLOUT OR WASTES COULD BE ACCUMULATED IN THE SAME WAYS. HOWEVER, AS CULTURES OF ACANT HARIA FOR TURNOVER EXPERIMENTS OF STRONTIUM HAVE NOT YET BEEN OBTAINED , THE A. HAS PLANNED A COMPARATIVE RESEARCH ON THE CONCENTRATION FACT OR FOR STRONTIUM-90 IN PLANKTON AS A WHOLE, CHOOSING PLANKTON SAMPLES RICH AND POOR IN ACANTHARIA. THIS IS THE CASE OF THYRRENIAN AND ADRI ATIC PLANKTON: THE FIRST WITH A MEAN AMOUNT OF 10 - 20 PERCENT OF ACAN THARIA, THE LATTER WITH ALMOST NO ACANTHARIA. A FIRST ATTEMPT IN THIS DIRECTION MADE DURING 1961-62 GAVE THE FOLLOWING RESULTS: STRONTIUM-9 0/GR SR, 110 LIGURIAN SEA, 349 ADRIATIC SEA; STRONTIUM-90/M3 SEA WATER , 65 LIGURIAN SEA, 122 ADRIATIC SEA; PERCENT STRONTIUM IN PL ASHES, 0. 62 LIGURIAN SEA, 0.053 ADRIATIC SEA; CONC FACTOR 10.490 LIGURIAN SEA, 1.907 ADRIATIC SEA. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE VALUES OF CALIFORNIUM IS ABOUT FIVE TIMES GREATER FOR THE THYRRENIAN PLANKTON WHERE ACANTHA RIA ARE ALWAYS PRESENT. A SECOND AND A THIRD SERIES OF SAMPLES HAVE B EEN ANALYZED AND ALTHOUGH ALL THE RESULTS ARE NOT AS YET AVAILABLE, TH E ABOVE MENTIONED CONCLUSION SEEMS TO BE CONFIRMED. A STUDY OF CORE S AMPLES OF COASTAL SEDIMENTS ALONG THE LIGURIAN COAST HAS BEEN STARTED COMPRISING SEDIMENTOLOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL ANALYSES OF STRONTIUM/CAL CIUM RATIO AND MEASUREMENTS OF RADIOACTIVITY.
