Description/Abstract:
THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL COORDINATE A HYDROLOGIC AND BIOGEOCHEMICAL STUDY OF GROUNDWATER ON THE ISLANDS OF ENIWETOK ATOLL WITH A GROUNDWA TER RADIONUCLIDE SURVEY TO BE CARRIED OUT BY LAWRENCE LIVERMORE LABORA TORY. THE RADIONUCLIDE SURVEY WILL MONITOR ACTIVITIES OF CS-137,SR-90, PU-239-240,CO-60,BI-207,EU-155,AM-241,SB-125,FE-55,SM-151, AND PM-147 AS A FUNCTION OF DEPTH AND TIME (OVER A PERIOD OF A YEAR) IN 14 TEST WELLS TO BE DRILLED ON SEVEN DIFFERENT ATOLL ISLANDS. THIS PROJECT WILL MEASURE RAINFALL RECHARGE, HYDROLOGIC HEAD AND TIDAL RESPONSE IN THE TEST WELLS AND WILL CARRY OUT BASIC HYDROLOGIC MODELL ING OVER THE SAME PERIOD AS THE RADIONUCLIDE SURVEY. IN ADDITION, ROUT INE MEASUREMENTS OF SODIUM, POTASSIUM, CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, STRONTIUM, CHLORINE, SULFATE, SULFIDE, NITRATE, PHOSPHATE, AMMONIA, OXYGEN, PH-L EVELS, TEMPERATURE, DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON, SILICA, TOTAL CARBON DIO XIDE AND COLIFORM BACTERIA WILL BE MADE AS A FUNCTION OF TIME, RECHARG E, HEAD, AND DEPTH IN WELLS. RADIONUCLIDE, HYDROLOGIC AND CHEMICAL DATA WILL BE INCORPORATED INTO A MODEL DESCRIBING THE EFFECTS OF PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROCESSES ON GR OUNDWATER QUALITY AND THE TRANSPORT RATES AND MECHANISMS OF RADIONUCLI DES DEPOSITED IN THE SOIL ZONE.
