Description/Abstract:
AT THE REQUEST OF THE SAFETY OFFICE, AIR FORCE WESTERN TEST RANGE (AFW TR), (NOW SAMTEC) TWO PERSONNEL OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH LABORATORY SET UP AND OPERATED A PORTABLE ANALYTICAL FACILITY AT ENIWETOK ATOLL, MARSHALL ISLANDS; ANALYSIS WAS FOR BERYLLIUM IN SOIL, AIR AND FILTER- PAPER SWIPE SAMPLES, BEFORE AND AFTER FIRING A BERYLLIUM-CONTAINING MI SSILE ENGINE. THE BACKGROUND CONTAMINATION FROM PREVIOUS TESTS WAS VAR IABLE, RANGING FROM NEGLIIBLE TO QUITE HIGH; THE POST-FIRING CONTAMINA TION PATTERN WAS APPROXIMATELY AS EXPECTED SINCE THE ENGINE OPERATED I N ACCORDANCE WITH SPECIFICATIONS. ANALYSES AFTER DECONTAMINATION OPERA TIONS REVEALED THAT THE CLEANUP WAS REASONABLY SUCCESSFUL, THE FINAL B ERYLLIUM CONTENT OF THE SOIL BEING IN MANY CASES LESS THAN THE ORIGINA L CONTAMINATION PRESENT.
