Description/Abstract:
A QUANTITATIVE METHOD FOR THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE ANALYSIS OF ALPHA EMITTE RS IN CACO-3 MATRICES BY SOLID-STATE TRACK DETECTION ( CELLULOSE NITRA TE ) WAS DEVELOPED. 0.4PCI/G IN AN AREA OF 4 MM-2 CAN BE MEASURED ROUT INELY; SMALLER CONCENTRATIONS CAN BE DETERMINED BUT WITH A LOWER RESOL UTION. CALIBRATION METHODS USED WERE (A) A PU SOURCE OF 0.15 MICROCI I N CONJUNCTION WITH POLYCARBONATE AND CACO-3 ABSORBERS OF DIFFERENT THI CKNESS (2-30 MICRO MILLI) AND (B) A POWDERED CORAL SAMPLE FROM ENEWETA K ATOLL WHICH HAD BEEN RADIOCHEMICALLY ANALYZED FOR PLUTONIUM RADIONUC LIDES, AM-24 AND OTHER LONG-LIVED FISSION AND ACTIVATION PRODUCTS. SLABS OF A CORAL, FAVITES VIRENS, FROM BIKINI LAGOON WERE ANALYZED. A QUANTITY OF THE ALPHA EMITTERS DETECTED IN REGIONS OF THE CORAL IDENTI FIED WITH GROWTH DURING THE YEARS OF NUCLEAR TESTING ( 1954, 1956 AND 1959 ) ARE FOUND IN SMALL DISCRETE SPOTS. THIN SECTIONS CUT PARALLEL T O THE DIRECTION OF CORAL GROWTH GIVE DIFFERENT PATTERNS OF DISTRIBUTIO NS. NO SUCH " HOT SPOTS " ARE EVIDENT IN ANY POST-TEST YEAR GROWTH SEC TIONS ALTHOUGH PLUTONIUM AND OTHER LONG LIVED FISSION AND ACTIVATION P RODUCTS WERE MEASURED IN THESE SECTIONS BY RADIOCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES.
