Description/Abstract:
FROM PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECOND NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON RADIO ECOLOGY, HE LD AT ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN, MAY 15-17, 1967. PLANT AND ANIMAL TISSUE SAMPLES COLLECTED FROM VARIOUS ISLETS AT ENIWE TOK ATOLL IN 1964 AND 1965 HAVE BEEN ANALYZED FOR GAMMA RADIATION. CES IUM-137, THE MOST ABUNDANT ISOTOPE IN THE ANALYSIS, WAS FOUND IN PLANT TISSUES (LEAVES AND FRUIT) AND IN RATS (WHICH ARE ESSENTIALLY VEGETAR IANS ON THESE ISLETS). BOTH PLANTS AND RATS FROM ISLETS (OR AREAS OF I SLETS) CLOSEST TO SITES OF THE MORE RECENT TEST OPERATIONS HAD THE HIG HER LEVELS OF CS-137. LEVELS IN THE BIOLOGICAL COMMUNITY AT THE MOST D ISTANT POINT FROM THE OPERATIONS IN THE ATOLL WERE NEGLIGIBLE.
