Description/Abstract:
MALE SPRAGUE-DAWLEY RATS WERE EXPOSED AT 101 DAYS OF AGE TO WHOLE BODY DOSES OF 430 OR 680 RADS OF X RAYS OR TO 230, 320 OR 360 RADS OF FAST NEUTRONS. DENTAL LESIONS, EVIDENCED BY CHALKY WHIT ZONES IN THE TOOTH SUBSTANCE, BEGAN APPEARING AT THE GINGIVAL CREST APPROXIMATELY 35 DAYS POSTIRRADIATION IN THE MANDIBULAR INCISORS AND SEVERAL WEEKS LATER IN THE MAXILLARY INCISORS. THE TIME OF MAXIMUM INCIDENCE OF ANIMALS WITH LESIONS OCCURRED BETWEEN THE FIFTIETH AND SEVENTY-FIFTH DAYS POSTIRRA DIATION AND, BY THE END OF THE FORTH MONTH, ALL LESIONS HAD DISAPPEARE D FROM THE CONTINUALLY GROWING INCISORS THROUGH ATTRITION AT THE OCCLU SAL EDGES. THE TOTAL INCIDENCE OF ANIMALS WITH ONE OR MORE LESIONS WAS 97 PERCENT AFTER 430 RADS OF X RAY AND 1000 PERCENT AFTER ALL OTHE R DOSES. THE SIZE OF THE LESIONS AND THE NUMBER OF LESIONS PER ANIMAL WERE GREATER AT THE HIGHER DOSES FOR EACH TYPE OF RADIATION. IN SOME A NIMALS FRACTURES OCCURRED AT THE LESION AND WERE CONFINED LARGELY TO M ANDIBULAR INCISORS. THE TOTAL INCIDENCE OF ANIMALS WITH FRACTURED INCI SORS WAS GREATER AT THE HIGHER DOSES FOR EACH TYPE OF RADIATION. FOOD IN MEAL FORM, PRESENTED IN OPEN CONTAINERS, RESULTED IN A LOWER INCIDE NCE OF FRACTURES AS COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF A PREVIOUS STUDY IN W HICH THE SAME FOOD IN PELLET FORM WAS SUPPLIED IN WIRE MESH CONTAINERS . NEUTRONS APPEARED TO BE TWO TO THREE TIMES MORE EFFECTIVE THAN X RAYS IN PRODUCING THE LESIONS.
