GESTATING RATS WERE INJECTED INTRAVENOUSLY WITH DOSES OF 191 MICROCURI ES OR 382 MICROCURIES OF STRONTIUM-90 ON THE 2ND, 10TH AND 17TH DAYS P OST-CONCEPTION. EXAMINATION OF IMPLANTATION SITES ON THE 20TH DAY POST -CONCEPTION SHOWED THAT THE INJECTION OF STRONTIUM-90 ON DAY 2 POST-CO NCEPTION CAUSES A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN FETAL MORTALITY AND GROWTH R ETARDATION, GREATER IN DEGREE AFTER THE LARGER DOSE, AND THAT INJECTIO N OF STRONTIUM-90 ON THE 10TH POST-CONCEPTION DAY RETARDED GROWTH AND INCREASED MORTALITY (SLIGHTLY) ONLY AFTER THE LARGER DOSE. THE MATERNA L HEMATOCRIT WAS LOWERED SIGNIFICANTLY AT BOTH DOSE LEVELS FOLLOWING S TRONTIUM-90 INJECTION ON EITHER THE 2ND OR 10TH DAY POST-CONCEPTION, AND THIS EFFECT WAS GREATER IN THOSE INJECTED ON DAY 2 POST-CONCEPTION . THE HEMATOCRIT OF FETUSES OF STRONTIUM-INJECTED RATS WAS DECREASED S LIGHTLY, BUT NOT SIGNIFICANTLY. THE INJECTION OF EITHER 191 OR 382 MIC ROCURIES OF STRONTIUM-90 ON DAY 17 POST-CONCEPTION DID NOT CAUSE ANY A PPARENT DIFFERENCES FROM CONTROL VALUES IN BODY WEIGHTS AND NUMBERS OF VIABLE OFFSPRING PER LITTER AT PARTURITION. THERE WAS AN INCREASED DA ILY CUMULATIVE MORTALITY IN OFFSPRING OF STRONTIUM-TREATED RATS DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF LIFE, BUT THIS WAS NO LONGER EVIDENT BY ONE MONTH OF AGE.
