Description/Abstract:
PROPERTIES OF NUCLEAR DEBRIS THAT AFFECT ITS DISTRIBUTION AND CONCENTR ATION IN WATER SYSTEMS AND THE BIOLOGICAL AVAILABILITY OF RADIONUCLIDE S TO EDIBLE AQUATIC ORGANISMS WERE ASSESSED FOR DEBRIS FROM NUCLEAR CR ATERING EVENTS. FROM PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION, IT WAS CALCULATED THA T LONG-DISTANCE TRANSPORT OF DEBRIS CAN OCCUR IN DYNAMIC WATER SYSTEMS . LEACHABILITY OF DEBRIS WAS FOUND TO VARY WITH THE RADIONUCLIDE AND T O DEPEND ON PARTICLE SIZE, ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF ACTIVITY IN THE PART ICLE, AND ON THE COMPOSITION OF THE LEACHING SOLUTION. BIOLOGICAL AVAI LABILITY WAS STUDIED IN AQUARIA OR LARGE POOL SYSTEMS WHERE RADIONUCLI DE CONCENTRATIONS WERE FOLLOWED IN WATER, SUSPENDED MATERIAL, AND AQUA TIC ORGANISMS. BIVALVE MOLLUSCS AND CURSTACEANS USUALLY HAD HIGHER RAD IONUCLIDE CONCENTRATIONS THAN FISH. THE AVAILABILITY OF SOME RADIONUCL IDES WAS LESS THAN THAT OBSERVED IN EXPERIMENTS WITH PURE, COMMERCIALL Y-OBTAINED RADIONUCLIDES AND MAY BE DUE TO DIFFERENCES IN PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL FORM. ESTIMATES OF THE WHOLE-BODY DOSE TO MAN FROM CONSUMPTIO N OF THE AQUATIC ORGANISMS INDICATE THAT I-131, BA-140/LA-140, AG-110M , AND W-181 ARE POTENTIAL MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS.
