Description/Abstract:
GEOLOGIC MAPPING AND STRATIGRAPHIC INVESTIGATIONS ALONG THE EASTERN MA RGIN OF THE ACOMA AND SOUTHERN SAN JUAN BASINS HAVE YIELDED INFORMATIO N THAT WILL AID EXPLORATION FOR OIL AND GAS IN THESE BASINS AND ADJACE NT AREAS. THE PENNSYLVANIAN SERIES OF THE CARBONIFEROUS SYSTEM AND PA RTS OF THE PERMIAN SYSTEM ARE WELL EXPOSED IN THE LUCERO AREA. THE GR EAT THICKNESS OF THESE ROCKS INDICATES THE PRESENCE OF A PERSISTENT SE DIMENTARY BASIN DURING LATE PALEOZOIC TIME, AND THEIR THINNING TOWARD THE WEST, SOUTH, AND NORTH INDICATES RELATIONSHIPS THAT MAY BE FAVORAB LE TO THE ACCUMULATION OF OIL AND GAS IN STRATIGRAPHIC TRAPS. A SINUOUS BELT OF THRUST FAULTS, ABOUT 25 MILES LONG, EXISTS ALONG THE EASTERN MARGIN OF THE ACOMA BASIN. THIS FEATURE, HERE TERMED THE COMANCHE THRUST BELT, MARKS THE APPROXIMATE EASTERN EDGE OF THE PALEOZ OIC ROCK EXPOSURES. MOVEMENT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN FROM WEST TO EAST. STRATIGRAPHIC DISPLACEMENTS OF 3,000 FEET ARE COMMON. THE ROCKS ALON G THIS NARROW BELT ARE COMPRESSED AND CONTRAST STRONGLY WITH ADJACENT AREAS TO THE WEST WHERE DEFORMATION IS SLIGHT. THE COMANCHE THRUST BE LT HAS BEEN FURTHER MODIFIED BY STRONG NORMAL FAULTING RELATED TO THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY SUBSIDENCE. THE AREA MAPPED IS, IN A GENERAL SENSE, PART OF AN ELONGATE ARCH, WHICH HAS BEEN BROKEN FIRST BY THRUSTING AN D LATER BY NORMAL FAULTING. THE LADRON MOUNTAINS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN PART OF THE AREA ARE A LARGE BLOCK OF PRE-CAMBRIAN ROCKS WHICH HAS BEE N GREATLY UPLIFTED AND DEEPLY ERODED.
