Description/Abstract:
PENNSYLVANIAN AND PERMIAN STRATA UNDERLYING THE EASTERN PART OF THE SA N JUAN BASIN OFFER POSSIBILITIES FOR THE ACCUMULATION OF OIL AND GAS A ND HAVE NOT BEEN SUFFICIENTLY TESTED. EXPLORATION OF THESE POSSIBLE A REAS OF ACCUMULATION CAN BE MOST EFFECTIVELY UNDERTAKEN IF GUIDED BY A LL AVAILABLE INFORMATION ON THE STRATIGRAPHIC VARIATIONS OF THE PENNSY LVANIAN, PERMIAN, AND YOUNGER ROCKS EXPOSED IN THE MOUNTAIN UPLIFTS TH AT BORDER THE BASIN. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE STRATIGRAPHY AND STRUC TURE OF THE NACIMIENTO AND SAN PEDRO MOUNTAINS WHICH LIE ALONG PART OF THE EASTERN FLANK OF THE BASIN. THE GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION AND STRA TIGRAPHIC VARIATIONS OF THE PALEOZOIC AND MESOZOIC ROCKS IN AN AREA OF APPROZIMATELY 1,250 SQUARE MILES ARE SHOWN IN THE ACCOMPANYING MAP AND DIAGRAMS. THE WESTERN THIRD OF THE AREA MAPPED INCLUDES THE EDGE OF THE SAN JUAN BASIN AND, THEREFORE LIES IN THE EASTERNMOST PART OF T HE COLORADO PLATEAU PROVINCE. THE NACIMIENTO AND SAN PEDRO MOUNTAIN U PLIFT OCCUPIES THE CENTRAL PORTION OF THE MAPPED AREA AND IS THE SOUTH WESTERNMOST RANGE OF THE SOUTHERN ROCKY MOUNTAIN PROVINCE. THE JEMEZ PLATEAU OCCUPIES THE EASTERN PART OF THE MAPPED AREA AND APPEARS TO BE AN EXTENSION OF THE BASIN AND RANGE PROVINCE. IT IS LARGELY SURFACED BY EXTENSIVE BASALTIC TO RHYOLITIC FLOWS AND TUFFS, EXTRUDED FROM THE VOLCANIC CENTERS OF VALLE GRANDE. THE NORTHEASTERN PART OF THE MAPPED AREA INCLUDES PART OF THE CHAMA BASIN, AN EASTWARD EXTENSION OF THE SAN JUAN BASIN. A STUDY OF THE TYPE, THICKNESS, AND LATERAL VARIATIONS OF THE PENNSYLV ANIAN AND PERMIAN STRATA REVEALS THAT THEY TRANSGRESSIVELY OVERLAY AN OLD LAND MASS COMPOSED OF PRE-CAMBRIAN IGNEOUS AND METAMORPHIC ROCKS W HICH FURNISHED AN AMPLE SOURCE OF CLASTIC MATERIAL TO BE DEPOSITED AS SEDIMENTS. EVIDENCE PROVIDED BY SEVERAL WELLS DRILLED IN THE SOUTHEAS TERN SAN JUAN BASIN INDICATES A PENNSYLVANIAN AND PERMIAN SEDIMENTARY BASIN LYING TO THE WEST AND SOUTHWEST OF THE LAND MASS. SCANTY DATA S UGGEST THE PRESENCE OF ANOTHER SEDIMENTARY BASIN EAST OF THE ANCIENT NACIMIENTO-SAN PEDRO LAND MASS, IN THE AREA NOW OCCUPIED BY THE RIO GR ANDE VALLEY. THIS BASIN LIES TO THE WEST OF THE CERRITO DEL LOBO AXIS .
