Description/Abstract:
STRATIGRAPHIC AND STRUCTURAL TRAPS IN THE PENNSYLVANIAN AND PERMIAN RO CKS IN NORTH CENTRAL NEW MEXICO OFFER POSSIBILITIES OF OIL AND GAS ACC UMULATION THAT HAVE NOT YET BEEN IN THE ACCOMPANYING DIAGRAMS AND ON T HE MAP, WHICH REPRESENTS AN AREA OF ABOUT 4,700 SQUARE MILES, LYING PA RTLY IN THE BASIN AND RANGE STRUCTURAL PROVINCE AND PARTLY IN THE SOUT HERN ROCKY MOUNTAINS. THE AREA IS STRUCTURALLY DIVERSIFIED. THE FOLD ED AND FAULTED SOUTHERN END OF THE SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS EXTENDS INTO IT FROM THE NORTH; THE TILTED FAULT BLOCKS OF THE MANZANO, MANZAN ITA AND SANDIA MOUNTAINS FROM A HIGH STRUCTURAL AND TOPOGRAPHIC LINEAM ENT NEAR THE WESTERN MARGIN; AND THE INTRUSIVE ROCK MASSES OF THE ORTI Z, SAN PEDRO AND SOUTH MOUNTAINS AND THE MONADNOCKS OF THE PEDERNAL MO UNTAINS AND CERRITO DEL LOBO RISE ABOVE THE STRUCTURALLY DEPRESSED GAL ISTEO BASIN AND ESTANCIA VALLEY, WHICH EXTEND OVER MUCH OF THE SOUTH-C ENTRAL PART OF THE AREA. IN THE UPLIFTS, EXCEPTING THOSE FORMED BY IN TRUSIVE ROCKS, IGNEOUS AND METAMORPHIC ROCKS OF PRE-CAMBRIAN AGE ARE E XPOSED. THE ROCKS OF THIS BASEMENT COMPLEX PROVIDED THE SOURCE FOR MU CH OF THE CLASTIC MATERIAL IN THE OVERLYING PALEOZOIC SEDIMENTARY ROCK S AND ALSO FORMED THE SURFACE ON WHICH THEY WERE DEPOSITED. ON THE FL ANKS OF THE SEVERAL UPLIFTS LIE THE OUTCROP BELTS OF THE PENNSYLVANIAN AND PERMIAN STRATA. THE STUDY OF THE CHARACTER, THICKNESS AND LATER- AL VARIATION OF THESE STRATA REVEALS THE LOCATION OF SEDIMENTARY BASIN S OF PALEOZOIC AGE ALONG THE MARGINS OF WHICH THERE ARE POSSIBILITIES OF ACCUMULATIONS OF OIL AND GAS.
