Description/Abstract:
A HIGHLY PURIFIED LOW-IODINE DIET WAS PREPARED AND FED TO RATS FOR 8 W EEKS IN ORDER TO MEASURE ACUTE CHANGES IN IODINE METABOLISM. RECOVERY OF DIETARY IODINE WAS MEASURED BY ADDITION OF RADIOACTIVE I-131 TO TH E FOOD, AND THIS RECOVERY WAS DISAPPOINTINGLY POOR. SINCE I-131 WAS AD DED TO THE DIET TO MEASURE RECOVERY OF IODINE DURING CHEMICAL ANALYSIS , IT WAS DECIDED TO MIX I-131 WITH THE DIET AND FEED IT TO THE ANIMALS UNTIL THEIR THYROID GLANDS CONCENTRATED THE DIETARY IODINE. IT WAS HO PED THIS WOULD ALLOW FOR DEPENDABLE CHEMICAL DETERMINATIONS TO BE PERF ORMED. SOME FECAL IODINE EXCRETED BY RATS FED COMMERCIAL CHOW APPEARED TO BE DERIVED FROM UNABSORBED DIETARY IODINE PRESENT IN THE DIET IN A N UNDETERMINED STATE.
